What doctor can identify the cause of your hairloss?

Can a doctor even identify the exact cause of the diffuse thinning or hair loss?
For example, it being male pattern baldness, or Telogen Effluvium caused by stress, etc?
Which doctor would you go to? The dermatologist, or the trichologist?

Dermatologists are more experienced. I've heard of general doctors who don't even know what Propecia and Minoxidil are!
