If you read this message board frequently, you probably know as much as the dermotologist when it comes to proven hairloss treatment. What you really want out of him is a prescription and to get your blood work done.
1. First, you should let him evaluate you, but if you are at the first stages of male pattern baldness and you're just beginning to recede or thin in a typical pattern, you know that you have male pattern baldness. If it looks like male pattern baldness, it's probably male pattern baldness.
2. Secondly, make sure you at get a prescription for Finasteride. Propecia will do fine, but it doesn't hurt to ask your doctor if he will prescribe Proscar for you to save some money by splitting pills. Whether or not you are planning take the medicine is irrelevant. It's nice to have the prescription so you can fill it if you ever want to begin treatment.
3. Get your blood work done. Be persistant about this and say that if you are going to take Propecia/Finasteride, that you'd really like to know what your hormones look like now in case there is a problem later on. This is also a cool little measurement to see how finasteride is working for you. After 6 months of dosing Finasteride, you can get your bloodwork done again and see how much you've reduced your DHT levels. Cool!
4. You may want to get a perscription for Nizoral 2%, but that is up to you. 1% works just fine for most if not all.
5. Ask for free samples. Companies give the dermatologists free bottles of Rogaine and Propecia. You could leave the doctors office and get started with treatment before you even hit the pharmacy.
