Obviously one of THE biggest questions in many male pattern baldness folks' minds is: what is better: Propecia or Avodart. I recently switched from Propecia (daily) to Avodart (every other day) - it's been over two months, and thus far, I've noticed NO difference (in fact, I seem to be thinning a tad more). Now, I know these things take time, but I've read SO many different things, and I know everyone responds differently, but PLEASE ... from ALL of the knowledge you vet posters have, in YOUR opinion, which do you think is more effective for male pattern baldness - Propecia or Avodart? I would love some feedback as I just don't know what to do right now. Thanks, guys!

Stick with propecia for at least a year before you think about avodart. To asnwer your question, which is better, it depends on how each individual responds to the drug. Propecia has been approved hence it is safer and more commonly used

Propecia inhibits less DHT than Avodart.

Avodart inhibits more DHT than Propecia.

Thie incidence of side effects is directly linked to efficacy, therefore Avodart is more like to carry side effects with it.

I'm inclined to agree with you, Radio. It's odd, because I SO much want to find out my information on this site from "us male pattern baldness folks in the trenches", but there is SO much information that varies from person to person. And, even though I know everyone responds differently, it seems like there should be some kind of a general opinion, such as "Avodart is definitely more effective that Propecia" or vice versa. However, perhaps this is just wishful thinking on my part - perhaps I'll never get a clear answer. If I'm not mistaken, though, doesn't dutasteride do the EXACT same thing as finasteride, but just block MORE DHT? If that's the case, then it seems like it would be a "no brainer" that it is more effective in the battle against male pattern baldness ... but again, that may just be wishful thinking.

The answer is clear if you wish to see it.

Dutasteride inhibits more DHT than Finasteride.

In a person taking either Finasteride or Dutasteride for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), the growth of scalp hair will be judged a 'side' effect.

In a person taking either Finasteride or Dutasteride for Male Pattern Baldness (male pattern baldness), the reduction in prostate size will be judged a 'side' effect.

Side effects are caused by the inhibition of DHT.

Dutasteride is more effective at inhibiting DHT, therefore it will cause a higher incidence of side effects (the side effect of scalp hair growth included).

The increased side effects means the choice is not a 'no-brainer'

Concur, Radio. By the way, the "no brainer" comment was not regarding whether one should take dutasteride or not. It was in reference to that point that dutasteride is more effective in combating MBP than Propecia (regardless of side effects).

Ah, I see!

Yes, the numbers are on Dutasterides side.
