Hi all, first post here, glad to be a part of the community. Ill get straight into it - towards the tail end of 2015 my hair started to fall out and became very rapid shedding (losing 10+ hairs every time i ran my hand through my hair). I believe it was telogen effuvium triggered by depression and mental stress - extremely bad relationship, mother diagnosed with dementia, huge fights at home on the daily, lost 25kgs at the beginning of the year over 4 months, all whilst completing my final year of school. my bloods were perfect so it wasn't a thyroid or iron issue and my diet was great and I exercise frequently and am in very good shape. around 2.5 months ago my hair began to feel normal again - it didnt feel brittle, the shedding slowed and then stopped and my scalp stopped prickling/itching and i thought i saw some regrowth. however, when i look at my hair i can not see any regrowth at all and my hairs are very spread out compared to before and my scalp is feeling prickly/off again. my hairline is a N0.5 and crown is normal. Why is my hair not growing back and thickening back up? Is it possible that my hair will not grow back? what can I do to help this - i have finasteride but have not started any yet. I am 18. Thank you so much for reading this and any help you may be able to provide.

Yeah, it's called male pattern baldness, unless you're on a proven treatment, do not expect any regrowth

If you are genetically predisposed to lose your hair an onset of Telogen Effluvium will mean you most likely wont get the hair you lost back. Hair lost to Telogen Effluvium can a couple of years for hair to get back. I suggest you first try a shampoo with Piroctone Olamine such as Nutragena T-Gel Greasy which should relax your scalp, I use it every day with no problems. Secondly if you want results now, you could try Minoxidil which will bring back your hair if it is destined to come back eventually, try it for six months and see if there are any results. Other than that there is not much more you can do.

thanks for the reply mate - its weird because about 6 weeks ago i could brush my hair with a comb and maybe 1 hair would come out, now if i do it there are many more. is this more indicative of male pattern baldness or my Telogen Effluvium not have completely coming to an end???

See a doctor, who will tell you whether it really was/is Telogen Effluvium.

You can do the "pull test" if you want to find out if it is Telogen Effluvium, read about it here: https://www.hairlosstalk.com/news/education/telogen-effluvium-why-when-and-how/

Telogen Effluvium can last for a long time, there is no set length. Normally when the reason that triggered the Telogen Effluvium is dealt with you hair starts to recover, but like I said it can take years. If you are Norwood 0.5 it is unlikely you have male pattern baldness, however you may have diffuse thinning. Either way there is nothing really much you can do except wait or try the two things I mentioned and see how it goes.

I went through this same thing and at one point thought it would never get better. But I can tell you, it will. Maintaining a positive outlook is so important, but can be so hard when dealing with this. I found this video and it has helped me stay positive and understand my situation better. Maybe it can help some other people too:
