topical steroids

I had an appointment with my primary dermatologist on Thursday, and he prescribed Elocon. I did some searching but wasn't able to find much. This is surprising to me considering inflammation is a major component in hair loss (especially Androgenetic Alopecia, but it seemingly also plays a role in Telogen Effluvium/CTE,) and a topical steroid would combat that, at least that's the idea. I would think that any topicals used could also work better. Additionally, hypertrichosis is a known side effect of steroids. Given all that, it seems to me that maybe topical steroids could play a role in a treatment regimen. So why haven't people tried?

My other dermatologist suggested I try a topical steroid as well back in November, so obviously this isn't unheard of.

I have used clobetasol a topical steroid and it has relieve my scalp itch and reduced dandruff greatly although I've been told prolong use of a topical steroid can cause thinning of the hair and should only be used for two weeks

Thank you for providing your experience. I'm glad clobetasol was helpful. I have read that topical steroids can cause thinning of the skin over time, not the hair. But who knows. I've decided that the reason topical steroids aren't being pursued as possible adjunct treatments is because they are only to be used for 2 weeks at the most. How often is one able to cycle a topical steroid?

I used steroids on my scalp, and my hair has thinned in places somewhat. I would advise against using them, I "cured" my seborrheic dermatitis by putting a mixture of Bragg's apple cider vinegar and water on my scalp, and leaving it for a few mins, then washing it. Give it a few days to a few weeks and your seborrheic dermatitis will be gone.
