I've read somewhere that daily intake of too many vitamins can lead to accelerated hair loss.

Can this be true?

Any insight or references?

Too much of a vitamin can be toxic. I know that if you have an overabundance of one it will definitely have bad effects on your body. (ex: too much vitamin A can affect your hair negatively as well as your body. )

All you really need is one multivitamin a day..

There are very few vitamins that cause issues at high doses, as DonaldAnderson pointed out Vitamin A is one of these, but even this is fine to ingest in massive amounts in its natural beta-carotene form.

Levels of most vitamins in these formulas are set far below their therapeutic levels, vitamic C, for example with an RDA of 60mg is set at this level to combat scurvey (!!!), at doses many many times higher (reaching cell saturation at around 10,000 - 15,000mg a day) vitmain C protects from viral infections (including avain flu) as well as offering some protection from cetain cancers and heart disease.

The quality of the vitamins in these forumulas tends to be very poor, for example the vitamin E tends to be a non-ester like non-mixed tocopherols and the balance of some nutrients tends to ignore known antagonist issues like copper v zinc.

The average supermarket multivitamin is an exercise in extracting money from people not encouraging health.
