Thinking of quiting Finasteride... what do you think?

Ok i am 29 years old now and started taking Finasteride "1.25" a day since i was 24 years old. I have a decent amount of hair on my head its thin but i have a lot of it so you cant really tell i am balding unless i lift up my hair to see a slightly receding hairline. I also use nizarol a few times a week and have done this for years. I tried minoxidil for a year and i think it just did more bad then good so i quit that with no adverse effects.

About 2 years ago i had my blood checked and my Doctor told me i had high Test about 900 if i remember correctly and he said i had shockingly high Estrogen which i think was 200 and normal is like 50. He wanted me to see a specialist but i had just lost my job so this couldn’t happen.

I have since gotten back into the gym working out hard each day and i wonder if my hormonal status caused by Finasteride is having an effect on my gains. I really need to see a Doctor again and get my blood checked to see what my estrogen/test levels are.

My libido has been lower over the lat 5 years but i can still take care of my girl if you know what i mean. I just feel that i should be hornier more then i am, i am sure alot of its mental as well though.

Just recently too i was reading my Men’s Health Magazine and it was talking about diets and losing weight. Over to the side it listed 3 medicines that hamper diet and weight loss. One of these three was propecia and it said how it jacks up your hormones and can cause weight gain "water retention in the chest also it said". I am guessing this is from elevated estrogen levels.

So after much thought i think i am going to try and stop taking my Finasteride for a few months and see how things go.

My question is, if i notice my hair going away fast would starting Finasteride up again halt this and put me to where i am now?

Please let me know what you guys think about all if this.

First alarm. Have you read the mountains of comments about how you dont want to go above 1mg if at all necessary due to increased potential for side effects?

I tried minoxidil for a year and i think it just did more bad then good so i quit that with no adverse effects.
Ah. So you experienced shedding and freaked out. Well, thats why we're here. Shedding is not a bad sign. Its the first step in the process of regrowth. In any case, I don't think you need Propecia+minoxidil this early in the game. Your hair is ideal for Propecia alone, as you have found.

i had shockingly high Estrogen which i think was 200 and normal is like 50. He wanted me to see a specialist but i had just lost my job so this couldn’t happen.
LOL ... did you tell him you were taking a higher dose of a drug that causes increased estrogen by chance? If you did, your Doctor is a dolt. If you didn't, then you are a .... well ... you gotta tell your doctor obvious things like this. No specialist is needed here my friend.

Please let me know what you guys think about all if this.
Maybe you're just a busy guy but your thinking is full of errors right now related to some of the most common issues discussed here every day. So here it is in a nutshell. What is happening to you is not some mystery. You're taking more Finasteride than is recommended. The solution is not to stop the med. Its to get on a regular dosage. You are probably trying to cut corners on cost by getting Proscar and splitting the tabs into quarters (1.25mg) right? Bad idea. I know its a popular thing to do but invariably people complain of side effects.

Solution? Simple. Go to a derm, get a prescription for 1mg Propecia, and start taking it that way. Period. I have a feeling you will be enjoying sex a little more and your estrogen levels will take a dive fairly quickly. If you experience a shedding period, this time just ride it out. Things will recover in a few months.

Good Luck, and please don't ignore this advice.

Thanks so much for your reply what you say makes alot of sense and i have always wondered about that extra .25 i have been getting everyday from it, thats an extra 1.75 a week alone.

yes i have been cutting the circle pill from oversees to get the 1.25. Its very cheap but i am not worried about the price anymore if i can fix up my hormones.

As far as the minoxidil, the shedding did freak me out but i did give it a full year and just never saw any good returns from it.

I just got new health insurance so i supposed i should set up an appoinment and get a perscription for propecia.

I live in a new state so i guess i should start looking for a new Doctor.

You said dermatoligist? Is this who i should contact first?

Also what makes you think that even 1.0 Fina wont cause my hormones to be all messed up?

Remember you are blocking a form of Test with Fina which should raise Estrogen regardless of dose. I am sure the amount would be less taking less of a dose but do you think my Estrogen would go from 200 level back to normal range of say 50s from .25 difference?

thanks so much for your reply
