Thickness of hair vs. permanent hair loss

Just a curious question. I have really long hair (which of course used to be super-thick back in high school...ah, the days!) and every time I shower I notice that some of the hairs that fall off are pretty short, yet very thick. Now, I thought that hairs were lost only after going through a period of thinning, so the question is: am I losing these thick hairs or not (I'm assuming that they couldn't have gone through their entire growth cycle if they're short)?

Just for what it's worth, I'm on the (hopefully) winning combination of Rogaine (a few years), Propecia (about a year and a half), and Nizoral (only about 4 weeks, unfortunately).

If these hairs are tapered on the one side and have the bulb on the other, then they have not been cut between haircuts, which in fact indicates short cycling. This means that in a specific area of your scalp(if you are a diffuser then its all around) your follicles are being attrophied or have undergone an amount of punishment that renders them unable to sport the normal anagen phase length.

If they do not have the bulb then it is just breakage, if they are not tapered on the one end then congratulate your barber on my behalf personally.
