Just for interest in that patent Liao et al speculated tht the poorer efficacy of EGCG in whole cell assays was probably due to EGCG being degraded extremely quickly by whole cell culture. Its lifetime was something like 7 minutes in the whole cell culture vs 70 minutes in the 5-alpha reductase assays.
These polyphenols are relatively "delicate". Which probably accounts for their local as opposed to systemic effect on hamster flank organs.
