According to this article the good news is that there's no scientific evidence to suggest styling products such as gel can cause hair loss but they can potentially speed up/make your hair loss worse if you're already predisposed to the condition. This is because they can irritate and dry your scalp out.
If you do insist on using these products the advice here is to avoid the ones that contain ingredients that are bad for your scalp such as Isopropyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol & Polyethylene Glycol. Apply the product only to your hair and not you scalp and don't leve the product in your hair (without shampooing) for longer then 24 hrs. If you are already prone to dry, itchy scalp and dandruff then it's probably best not to use them at all tbh.
Hope this is of some help.

I have a classmate who I've known for 25 years, ever since he's 10, he always style his hair with tons of gels and never looked back. He says he even sleeps with it. Even in the 90's era, he's stuck with the boy band look with spiky hair, and when he hit his 20's he's been a heavy cigarette chain smoker and his lips are now violet lol. We are now both 30 yrs. old, but he still has thick hair and for sure has wax or some kind of lotion on it at the moment while he is chain smoking. While me, I'm on norwood 5 trying to regain my top with minoxidil and finasteride. Point is: It's more in your genetics. He doesn't have balding relatives, while I do. So yeah some of us had been fucked by genetics, but it's never too late I guess.

@joeblack2017 Yeah, but that's basically what I've just said - that gel or wax can't cause baldness. However it can possibly speed up the process if you've already got the balding genes.
