I have an alright hairline, not perfect as in straight but it is strong and has a sharp V definition. There are no miniaturising hairs around that region that I can see, however my sideburns are causing concern for me. My left sideburn is thick, but my right one isnt, the hairs are velius. It has been this way for a year and a half, but I am worried that it may eventually disappear. Would minoxidil help thicken it up?

I have no other thinning elseware.

...I wouldn't class that as anything to be worried about at all, most people I know have fine hair where you've pointed out (which isn't where I would class 'sideburns' as btw) girls and guys... it's a place most people have fine hair, my sister and many girls I know have fine hair there as well... your hairline looks perfect as well =/

Yeah the hairline is alright, but then it is not good as before where it used to be completely straight one :( (I can live with that I guess). As I know it can be much worse.

The next two pictures you should be able to see how the temply thingy loses its definition towards the end with finer hairs. Is this normal?

Thanks for your help dude.

I really think it is.. it's something I noticed long before I had any hair issues, lots of kids have hair in these areas and it always seems to have gone in adults, my sister is 22 and still has really prominent .. I dont know what you'll call them, she stilll has mousey hair there like kids do, most people have really fine hair there or no hair at all when they become adults, I really think it's a non issue, of course it's up to you at the end of the day.

Re: hairline. I have diffuse loss all over the top but my hairlines still the same, when I started obsessing over my hair I was sure mine had changed from a straight hairline to a curved one.. but looking at photos where you could see me top-down it was always like this... my hairline looks straight if you look at me head on, from the top it's U shaped.. because my head is also curved of course.. :p

I think anyone with a true straight hairline would be unusual (in the nicest way possible) =], almost everyone has a curved one, of course I'm sure you know better, but I really believed I'd receded a lot before I got a bit rational about it. I have a perfectly normal hairline. I think you do too.

Thanks dude, is your hairline like mine?

Yeah...I'm nearly 24 now, personally I don't think I have anything to worry about (not on meds), I have seen many guys rock the perfect V pattern and still have full head of hair later on in life. Seem to notice if anything there is a trend on bad hairloss and temple recession only, exactly like on the Norwood scale.

I think my hairloss would be been much more aggressive by now too.

Saying that it has been a cause of concern because the change in my hairline pretty much happened in one year (from looking at photos) at 21 and since 23 earlier this year thats when I found this site. I'm still going to keep a watchful eye over it.

How old are you mate? And when did your diffuse thinning start?

I am 23 and started when I was 21, very aggressive shedding first at the back and then eventually pretty uniform all over the top. =/ I saw a trichologist who said it can't be male pattern baldness because of no family history and it also happened all at once after I dyed my hair so they put it down to a bad reaction causing Telogen Effluvium, of course one year later I went back and we decided otherwise... >_> (really annoying as it got a LOT worse over that year)

All the diffuse loss is over the top of my head in the male pattern baldness areas though so have gone on the meds route.. been on finasteride for almost 8 months now and I believe there are improvements.. don't want to use minoxidil unless things really get worse, I can't imagine being able to apply that every night without anyone knowing..

I manage to hide it pretty well at the moment, but it's still a pain in the ***, I've been going out with someone for the last 6 months and I'm SURE they have no idea.. 0:) so it must've improved.

Sorry for the long story.. :)

Something you should think about as well is some people go through a short period of hair loss during their life time and then it seems to stop, this could be because some hormonal changes in the body that balance out.. well, just something to consider, of course like you say, keeping an eye on it is best, don't jump onto anything without a lot of thought but don't leave it too late either!

What about your hairline? What is the shape like - is it similar to mine? Ironicaly, ,many of my uncles lost hair through diffuse thinning, but then you had others that have receeded hairlines, but still have hair.

Admittedly, the period when I lost hair was a period when I was under absolute heavy stress, so you may have a point. Do these hairs grow back? Yeah the meds I am not going to jump on unless there is a significant recession - NW2+. As I know that once I start I will be dependent on them.

I would leave it alone. From the pictures you are still fine and should stop stressing out. Does your family on both sides have hereditary male pattern baldness?

Just remember, even if you don't have male pattern baldness, the hairline and hair by the side burns will recede anyway to a certain point. eg. baby hair eventually falls out.

Yeah pretty much, grandfather is a harseshoe on my mother side and my father has receeded. Saying that a lot of my uncles are not horseshoes, only 2 are, two are NW0/1s, 1 is a 2.5/NW3s and two are horseshoes. The ones that did lose it all had diffuse thinning, no bald spots in the family. Brother at 24 still has a full set of hair despite similar rescession of my type.

My cousins at 28/29 all have a strong hairline, not many straight ones - Vs.

I really don't think you have anything to worry about. My hair is really thin in that area as well. Actually, mine is sort of a pain in the ***, I look weird with short hair because that part of my hair is almost to my eyebrows. :(
Like someone else said, I think it thins on most guys and they lose it before adulthood. Most men I see (even if they have a perfect hairline) are missing that part of their hair.
Don't worry, your hairline looks pretty strong. A little recession isn't bad, it even makes some men look dignified. :)

Thanks for your input Autumn, yeah I guess my only concern is that it could progressively get worse.
