hey guys, is it true that when one loses about 50% of one's hair (in a certain area) in a 2-3 week span, and sees no replacement hair in that area, that is characterized as Telogen Effluvium? and if thats the case, will all that hair eventually regrow, but obviously not as thick as before? thanks...

If you have male pattern baldness, it will grow back, but probably not all of it. If you don't have male pattern baldness, all the hair you lost during the Telogen Effluvium will grow back. When you lose lots of hair all at once, it doesn't mean that your hair follicles are dying, it just means the hairs that are shedding are going into the resting phase - the reason they are falling out is new hairs are pushing them out.

thanks for the post... the problem is that i dont see any new hairs poking out... however, my derm told me that my follicles looked totally healthy... does that mean that as soon as a do away with 'the stress', those follicle will regrow hair?

Up to now after 3 months of shedding and losing 50% of hair which ended in January i have only just noticed regrowth sprouting up.A bit came up in the front more or less straight away but its only been the past few weeks i have noticed under a harsh light that regrowth is coming through over my thinnest areas and its going take ages for it to mature in to my other hair. The estimated recovery period for Telogen Effluvium can take up to a year and in some cases possibly longer.Taking vitamins wont hurt to help things along a bit.

From what i gather there isnt any treatment for Telogen Effluvium as it treats itself its self correcting. When a hair falls out another hair is ready to take its place.Vitamins help such as multi-vitamins and Biotin Msm.Really the best treatment of all for Telogen Effluvium is to keep stress levels low.

Oh right only i had the impression you had stress because of your hair and i didnt know you have been diagnoised with Telogen Effluvium.I would get some of the MSM vitamins since i have been on them they have helped me a bit you have to wait a month or so for them to kick in:)

If you go to google and type in MSM vitamins you will get a list of online retailers who sells them they are readily avaliable or try a health food shop which stock vitamins again they are readily avaliable so you shouldnt have any trouble getting some. :)

To all abou this whole Telogen Effluvium thing. I am told I have Telogen Effluvium also, but if I do it is in combination with male pattern baldness. The bottom line about Telogen Effluvium is that really anything can happen. It may all come back within a year or it may partially come back within 5 years. There is so much unknown about Telogen Effluvium and how it affects individuals. Generally speaking they know what Telogen Effluvium is all about, but with any one individual forget about predicting anything.

MSM is alright, I took it for awhile but I'm looking into getting flex-a-min which contains MSM along with glucosamine/chondroiton and hyaluronic acid.. good for skin & joints, etc.
