Telltale Signs Of A Hair Transpant?

My manager at work is in his early 40s and has a good head of hair for his age(about nw2 but a solid widows peak so centre of hairline is very low and recedes from there) he has a slight bit of diffused thinning further back but still in good shape for his age

Anyway, something I noticed today is that the hair on the back of his head(He keeps the hair at the back of his head shaved short) stops really high up his head. There is almost a perfect straight line where the hairline ends and neck starts. He is quite grey and there is no scarring from what I can see so maybe it' just very fine hair but it looks bare. Is this a sign that he may have had a hair transplant in the past?
