Hi.
I have been using minoxidil for several years.
Recently, my hair loss has been quite stable and not shedding much.
I have always used ‘Rogaine’ but recently switched to a Minoxidil Max ‘Dualgen’ product and after a few weeks, I’m shedding like crazy.
I’m wondering if this is bad for my hair OR if there is a possibility that the shedding is a positive sign that the additional ingredients in this product are working? Can these additional ingredients cause an initial shed?

Ingredients as follows:

  • Minoxidil 5% (i.e. 3 grams of minoxidil in bottle, i.e. 50mg/mL)

Azelaic acid 5% (i.e. 3 grams of azelaic acid in bottle, i.e. 50mg/mL)

    ABN complexTM 0.8%

    Retinol: 0.025%

    Caffeine: 0.001%

Those additional ingredients will make minoxidil absorb better, that might explain the shedding.

Sorry, can't help answer your question however that's an interesting blend of ingredients.

Why did you decide to make the switch? I have been reading about Azelaic acid recently and how it is good in combatting many times of Malassezia strains, including the one responsible for seb derm. Had you been suffering from seb derm / flakes whilst using Rogaine?

Thanks. I hope that's it. It's the retin a which increases absorption, yes?
I've read that caffeine can stop minoxidil from working properly, so I'm a bit concerned about that.

I may use this formula in the evenings and their minoxidil + AA in the evenings.

Just thought I might be able to get some results with it.
No I was not having flaking.

I guess the worry about caffeine would be the vasoconstriction, however the minoxidil / caffeine ratio is 500/1 so I wouldn't worry so much. Shedding typically indicates something working.

I started off with the Dualgen with just minoxidil and azlaic acid around 4 weeks ago and switched to this one around 2 weeks ago. Why do you ask?

Shedding ~30 days after starting a new treatment is generally a good sign. It will take ~100 days afterwards to see some good growth. I read this on Dr. Lee's site years ago and it's happened to me a few times.

Ok thanks. It will be interesting to see if this is a sign that Dualgen is more effective than ‘regular’ minoxidil. Then again, it’s also possible that this is just be a natural shed :(
Do you know how long shedding from a new treatment usually lasts?
I’ll keep this thread updated with my progress.

I'm unsure as to the length of the "shedding" period. I wouldn't concern myself with it though. Just relax and wait.

The last major shed I had was from a 12.5% minoxidil serum that Dr. Lee sold. I started using CB six weeks ago and I noticed a light shed around the four week mark.
