hi,

i've been using finasteride (in one form or another) since 04.

i am using fincar currently.. i take 1/4 of a pill a day.. so about 1.25 mg.

it just seems like i eat it, and it doesn't really do anything to my system.. i can't tell if it's working, i just don't know if it's really blocking enough DHT.

should i switch to dutas?

If your hair hasn't gotten any worse, then it probably is doing something! Don't expect much visible regowth, only a lucky few seem to get that.

I'd only suggest dutasteride if you know that finasteride isn't working well enough....i.e. your male pattern baldness is progressing.

There's a few things you have to consider with dutasteride (though you may already know all this!): Unlike finasteride which just blocks the type 2 enzyme of dht, dutasteride blocks both the type 2 and type 1 enzymes. This type 1 enzyme is reported to be used in the brain - though it does only block 50% of it, and women apparently produce less of it anyway... so it might not be a big deal. Also, dutasteride can take a very long time to leave your body, it's half-life is very long. If you get side effects then they will last for quite a long time before the drug leaves your body. Bear in mind too that if you plan to have kids at some point in the future you would have to come of it many months in advance.

Not trying to scare you though! I'm seriously considering dutasteride should the finasteride not work as well as I hope. Just thought i'd share some of the info I've picked up in these boards and in other places.

the main with dutasteride is the unknown long term side effects... it could turn out to be a safe drug like finasteride, but still, no one knows really... no doubt that it's much better for the hair though!
