Just a little bit of background...

My father is 58. His long term memory is fine, he can remember things from 20 years ago. However, his short term memory has deteriorated a lot in the last few years. He sometimes forgets things from the previous day (Not all the time).

Also, occasionally about once every two months, he'll completely space out, forget where he is, what he's doing, what he's done earlier etc.

He's had brain scans and docs say his brain is normal i.e. no signs of early onset of dementure/alzeinmers.

I've heard cod liver oil, ginko biloba etc. can help with memory.

Does anyone know is this is true, and if there's good supplement which incorperates all of the necessary ingredients?

I live in the UK if that affects availibility.

Thanks

Does he smoke, drink, eat hydrogenated food? If so, he should quit all of the above. Then he need phospholipids, which are #1 brain food.

I would supplement with 2 grams pure fish oil (best is Seven Seas Cardiomax, you'll find it at Boots and Morrisons, quite expensive), Phosphadityl Choline and Phosphadityl Serine (Solgar).

The above mentioned mix can be quite expensive (£ 30/40 a month), if your father can afford it, it's money well spent. I can't afford it...

He reads, owns his own business, in regular contact with people, is very clever (ex head teacher) so it's not as if it's his lifestyle. I don't know what hydrogenated food is, he eats pretty well, and goes to the gym (Although he is a bit overweight).

He gave up smoking 10 years ago, but until about 3 years ago was an alcoholic.

Fish oil is what I had in mind, I was wondering about other things. I'll look into Phosphadityl Choline and Phosphadityl Serine.
