II am still on propecia 1 year + . And during this one year there was virtually no male pattern baldness itch

But At times i feel usually at night a sudden prolonged itchiness (lasting 20 - 30 secs } combined with the feeling of which i describe as "something sprouting out from your scalp in large numbers" . When i scratch my scalp i sense no feeling of the itchness going away. durng this time the part of my scalp will feel numb or having some kind of "waves"

What is happening..

Hey Chewie.

This comment is just from personal experience and not from any scientific study, but from my experience sudden bouts of intense itchiness is NOT a good sign. For me, these itchiness spells presaged a period of male pattern baldness acceleration.

I would do anything and everything you can to get the irritation under control. Itchiness is a sign that you need to step up and maintain a religious discipline with your regimen. If you use Nizoral, I'd INCREASE your weekly frequency of use during this period, and I'd lay on a much heavier than normal layer of copper peptides during this period as well. Irritation needs to be fought hard.

I love how informative your posts are, Gardener.

This is absolutely true... Irritation must be put under control. I find that a thick layer of copper peptides 15-20 minutes after Rogaine application does wonders.

It cools the scalp so nicely... People who experience the male pattern baldness should definitely try copper peptides, or even Emu oil.

and also i like to point out to u during my initial stages of male pattern baldness of temple recede back in 2002, i had the "waves" but not the itchiness...it occured during a period of 2-3 days. At the time i did not know anything abt male pattern baldness>
the shed was not happening

Well about 1 year after that my male pattern baldness started with the shedding with the itchiness.but again it was very slow and gradual mainly loss by shedding and not sudden fallout for the next few years..hairline was pretty intact with diffuse only..then it stabilised . after which i started treatment on Jan 1 2005.

i'm surprised "noonebutme" hasn't jumped all over this one yet. i guess he's given up spreading his demodex theories.

I've never experienced anything but light itchiness with male pattern baldness, easily removed with time or a light scratch. Does itchiness have a sort of direct correlation to the pace of your male pattern baldness, or is it just one of many possible symptoms?

from personal expereince i say NO....If u itch more than another person who also have male pattern baldness, it doesnt meant u will have more severity than that person

Basically the Itch signify u have some form of hairloss.

From personal expereince a few yrs ago, my hair used to itch everyday. but i still had gradual diffuse thinning only and not sudden fallout...

well it can be argued that male pattern baldness is largely caused by inflammation due to the immune response of the body against the hair follicle, and as itchiness is for the most part due to inflammation then the connection would seem obvious.

The link between inflammation and male pattern baldness is not truly established. Look up the HairLossTalk.com article on inflammation.

And i dont think Immune response and male pattern baldness link is fully stablished eiher.

Recent research points to the protein synthesis of hair growth known as wise.

I say male pattern baldness has something to do with processes of Hair growth and cycles.

Key gene 'may reverse hair loss'

Bald mice re-grew fur once the gene was manipulated
Scientists believe manipulating genes within hair cells can reverse baldness.

Researchers found it was possible to re-grow fur on bald mice by correcting a gene mutation, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reported.

Mutations in the hairless gene in both humans and mice mean the natural process of hair growth, shedding and re-growth is disturbed.

The study was carried out by teams at the Kennedy Krieger Research Institute and Johns Hopkins University.

The so-called hairless gene works by repressing the production of a protein called wise, which can hinder the process of hair growth if it is left to accumulate.

Mutations in hairless can cause complete baldness by not curbing the influence of wise.

Hair growth

Half of men suffer from baldness by the age of 50 although there are a variety of different causes of which this gene mutation is just one.

In humans and mice with mutations in the hairless gene, hair growth is initially normal, but once hair is shed, it does not grow back, resulting in complete baldness.

But the researchers found by introducing a normal gene in bald mice they were able to restart the process, resulting in successful fur growth.

They said the findings shed light on the hair growth process, much of which was not understood.

Half of men go bald by the age of 50

But they said more research was needed as there were other components involved in hair growth.

Lead researcher Catherine Thompson said: "Hair is maintained through a cyclic process that includes periodic regeneration of hair follicles in a stem cell-dependent manner.

"The hair cycle consists of three defined stages - growth, followed by regression and rest.

"Disruption of hairless gene function causes a complex skin phenotype that includes specific defect in hair follicle regeneration in both humans and mice."

Barry Stevens, general secretary of the Trichological Society, which represents hair professionals, said: "The thinking in the US is that there is some sort of genetic solution to hair loss.

"And I think eventually they will be proved right, but there is still work to do.

"I think it is like a giant jigsaw and pieces of research such as this will play a role.

"But the truth is we just don't know when the solution will be found, you cannot prophesise on these things."

i'm not saying that your wrong but that study is extremely vague and they do not actually say that this WISE causes baldness but that it is probably one of the factors involved. its important to remember that these mice are engineered to have no hair, it is not a perfect simulation of the bald scalp where there are multiple factors involved. the mice always regrow their hair.
