Starting dutasteride: Do I have to keep taking finasteride?

It's really up to you, although I'd figure most posters would say, "just switch."

When I started Avodart, I stopped Propecia the previous day. As far as the inhibition goes, Avodart will start working on the first day.

In my opinion, ditch the finasteride.

I think you're thinking of minoxidil? Hairs regrown by minoxidil are dependent on continued use of the drug, and can't be maintained by other treatments. But finasteride and dutasteride both work in exactly the same way - they're 5 alpha reductase inhibitors.

Like Aplunk says, dutasteride will start working immediately, but I think it it will take a few days to reach its maximum potential, since its half life is much longer than finasteride. However, that shouldn't affect your hair.

Yes it works much faster than dutasteride. Half life is something like 6 hours compared to 5 weeks for dutasteride.

- is allergic to dutasteride and this is manifesting as Telogen Effluvium, or;
- the dutasteride is fake or;
- is unable to metabolise dutasteride for some very weird reason, or;
- is on a steriod that mimics DHT.

dutasteride annihilates 5ar. 5ar is the only mechanism by which DHT is made in the body unless you're shooting up a steriod like 1-test which will convert to DHT regardless (and no-one really knows how yet). So no or negligible 5ar = no or negligible DHT = drastically less receptor binding (test has a much lower affinity for the receptor than DHT) = drastically less hair loss.

Unless, of course, one of the conditions in the list applies.
