Stages Of Grief During Hair Loss Realization?

A couple posts here reminded me of that first six months when the HORROR of hairloss took root.

I was 19, a sophomore in college. I'd been riding a moped around campus with my roomate without a helmet or ballcap and with the hair being blown around, he noticed a serious thinning (diffusion) straight up the middle.

As i continued to ride the moped, i kept looking in the mirrors during the next week and seeing that WHITE SCALP that couldnt be denied.

Usual grief process is described as SHOCK, DENIAL, BARGAINING, ACCEPTANCE.

I think I skipped the denial phase and went straight to "QUACK CURES".

I bought any/all kind of snake oil miracle cure I could during that first six months.

Amazingly, my hair loss diffusion spread out over a decade..........because I thought I'd be completely bald by my senior year of college.

Damn, I was able to rock a combover for a few years and avoid being "outed" on campus.

I also forgot to mention human sacrifices and demon worshipping. They work better than finasteride and minoxidil anyway, I think.

So do I. Satan worship alone will bring your hair back.

Denial can cost people a lot of valuable time. Denial can be reinforced by the opinions of family and friends who insist that your hair is fine when it isn't. They are obviously trying to help but it can really come back and bite you.

Yes, I lost many months because of my mother when I was 17 and it all started.

to be fair if finasteride isnt stopping your loss now i dont think it would have made a difference when you started it.

why dont you look into experimental stuff?

Denial:

"What no - this cant be..everyone in my family has full hair"

"thats just my natural hairline - I WAS BORN WITH A HIGH HAIRLINE"

"Thats just a cowlick in bad lightening"

"My hair was always thinner at the corners - that is not miniturizations"

"Im not balding - thats just a mature hairline"

Anger:

"Why me"

"Why is there no cure yet"

Depression:

"My prime and youth is over"

"f*** im ugly i wont attract women anymore and my gf will leave me"

"Dont look in the mirror..dont look in the mir...okay but at least dont pull your hair baa..fuuuck"

Bargaining:

1.Hmm minoxidil doesnt sound too bad

2..hmm f*** minoxidil doesnt work at my corners but finasteride is poison ... lets start with saw palmetto, pumpkin seed oil and sulforaphane..they did studies on 3 mice once .. results look promising

3. Okay f*** that..finaateride it is i guess..lets start with 0.000467803 mg first to avoid sides...okay sh*t 1mg now..f*** my hairline is still receeding..time 2 upgrade 2 duta

4. Okay what about ru tho? Ok its not fda approve, it comes from.shady chinese labs and might f*** up my heart or vision..

5. Hmmm these tranny transition drugs doesnt sound too bad anymore..

Acceptance:

Buzzcut/ shave it off

Actually bald isnt that bad. Life goes on and since my gf left me/ wife stopped having sex with me i have more time for my hobbies

@Saulus,

So, what stage are you in now?

Some people have excellent responses to Finasteride, especially, followed by Minoxidil, and both.
For them, they will never have to use anything else, and they can go decades, if not more with
just the two.

For me, I knew it was a question of when, not if.

Yet, some people won't respond to either, or just one. So they have to accept it.

Definitely not true. There are a lot of success stories here and on other hairloss boards.

Anything that works on the vertex, should work on the hairline.

Even Minoxidil can sometimes work on it.

It's just they didn't test the hairline, only the vertex in FDA trials.

The thing is, for temple hair (in my own experience), I didn't treat it soon enough. So, I regrew
some of it back (what I lost recently), but not most of it (because follicles already died before
I used Finasteride on it).

How do you explain tjis sh*t?

https://academic.oup.com/annonc/article/24/6/1710/181282

"Recession of the frontal and parietal hairlines and diffuse hair loss (Figure 1a and b) were observed. Miniaturization of follicles in the fronto-temporal area (Figure 1c) was revealed. Behind the scalp area sensible to aromatase, in the frontal region, the diameter of hair was normal without any alterations, with normal hair density "

I've had hair loss for 23 years. Still at the "anger" stage, or between "anger" and "depression" going by that graphic above. I don't actively feel depressed at all, but I wonder how much I've just internalized to the point where I don't recognize it anymore. I certainly know that hair loss has greatly impacted my quality of life in myriad ways.

Not true

A simple search in YouTube will show you several video stories of guys who have documented their results from finasteride on video, MANY of them having some very good results in restoring vertex hair quality. It took them some time with the treatment to see it, but the stories are pretty profound. I highly suggest you go do a search... I think it will reassure you.

For me it was:

1. ''My hairline must have always been like that"

2. "It's just a mature hairline, just some recession"

3. Resorting to hipster methods: "I'm going to try leaving coconut oil in my hair overnight and using main n tail conditioner, I've heard they're good for thickening hair"

4. "I have male pattern baldness and need to take drugs for the rest of my life"
