Soy with finasteride: Is this a bad combo?

I've been hearing people saying how finasteride decreases testosterone and increases estrogen, which from what it sounds like, is what leads to these sexual side effects. I've been a big soy fan for a long time now, and I even tried getting more of it in my system when I heard it could actually be used to help fight hair loss (It's also good for hair even if you're not losing it.). I've also heard from many sources that soy can increase your estrogen and possibly lead to things like impotence (I think much of what is said about soy is theory.); however, this only happens when soy is consumed in excess. Now someone correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the finasteride side effects come from lowered testosterone and increased estrogen? Soy has never hurt me in the past, but I'm starting to wonder if taking it along with finasteride will increase my chances of side effects? I'm still still waiting to see if my sex drive comes back the rest of the way (still on finasteride). Any thoughts on this?

finasteride increases testosterone, which increases estrogen.

Hi Harie, are there any supplements that would help to lower estrogen while on finasteride, lignans or green tea. Arimidex is too expensive for me. My estrogen levels get out of whack, I'am going to try to take a lower dose either 0.5mg or 0.25mg ED. Thanks Harie

Either way, the idea is to lower estrogen. It sounds like it would be a good idea to lay of the soy a little since it increases estrogen.

Soy does not increase estrogen. Soy is a phytoestrogen (mimics estrogen in the body). In men, this can be a very bad thing since it is basically the same thing as estrogen (binds to AR receptors etc). Personally, if I were on finasteride, I sure as hell wouldn't be drinking soy milk.

Soy protein isolate, maybe...And soy isoflavones, also maybe.

Flax Lignans are a good natural way to decrease estrogen, as is DIM. Also you may want to try taking a zinc supplement. Zinc inhibits aromotase which converts testosterone into excess estrogen.
