So what are my chances?

Hi all,

I'm 20 years old and have long thick curly hair which I really don't want to lose. Unforunately for me almost every one in my family is balding so I'm pretty much 100% sure it can happen to me any moment.
I always had a hairline that a little higher than average but because I have gigantic thick hair it is no problem hiding this.

I read everywhere that the sooner you start to fight the longer you can stand your ground against male pattern baldness.

So what if I start taking finasteride right now or maybe within two years even when I then still don't see any major signs of male pattern baldness? If I am a average responder how are my chances than? Is it realistic that I can keep the same hair status for the next 10 years because I started fighting so early or is this just something for the lucky ones?

Thanks!

The fact that people in your family have male pattern baldness doesn't necessarily mean that you will too. You should not get on any medication before you start losing your hair.

Just monitor your hair, and if you ever start losing it get a prescription for finasteride.

Keep an eye on your hair: Density, Hairline, and crown/vertex at the top/back.

Don't worry about it until you notice loss. Also look up hair miniaturization for the hairline.

If you aren't losing, don't take anything. If you do start, immediately start finasteride.

Yeah well another problem is is that I have this obsession for 3 years right now so I kind of lost my objectivity. One day I think 'OMG it is going really fast right now! :sobbing: ' and the other day I think 'man what was I thinking yesterday :) '.

My God, people really are crazy. On the one hand I'm glad that I'm not like that, but on the other hand I wished that I had cared more when I first started losing it. I wish I hadn't been spoon-fed all that "there's nothing you can do about it" crap.

You don't go bald overnight. It's not like it's gonna be too late to treat it if you notice it a week after it has started. Get a grip dude.

If you're that bad about it then get a nice camera and take a lot of pictures of the top, crown, left and right temple, front, both when dry and when wet.

In 3 months, do it again. 3 Months later, do it again.

If no change, do it every 6 months. You'll realize eventually if you're losing or not. Or post them on here and let us take a look, most of us are pretty good at figuring out if it's changing or not.
