So is hair loss treatment ultimately a losing battle?

I'm new here, but I've been reading up and down on this board since my hair started thinning in the front and crown about a month ago. Both my paternal and paternal grandfathers are bald so I got kind of screwed with genes. I've been on a strict regimen with propecia and rogaine for about a week now, as recommended/prescribed by my doctor. Also picked up a bottle of nizoral shampoo which I use every 3 days or so.

This board is awesome and gives me a lot of hope with success stories. But it seems there's a consensus that eventually any progress or treatments to stabilize hairloss and/or improve your hair will eventually stop some years down the road. Is this really something that every guy suffering from hairloss has to come to terms with? Even if I take propecia and rogaine every day without fail that one day, whether it's 2 years from now or 10 years, all this progress and maintenance will come to a screeching halt and I'll have to learn to accept my hair loss and resort to hairpieces/surgery? Honestly, I'm not trying to be a downer but rather trying to clarify what other posters have said. I'm only 20 years old and my hair loss is already starting so it's all pretty discouraging.

My take is that unless HM comes out soon the middle aged guys (around 40) are screwed but we might be
able to delay the screwing for a few years if we respond well and maybe supplement with a
transplant. I can't imagine hair being as important to me in 20 years as it is at 40.

However I would bet that someone starting the big 3 at age 20 will see HM by the time they need it at
40 or so. But if you have aggressive hair loss you're in the same boat as the middle aged guys.

Like casperz said it's all about saving more time until HM came, then we can breath more easy but we still need to use the meds. I just hope that soon we will have new treaments in this battle specially more safe dht blocker

I feel sure for someone that is around age 20 there will be a total cure for hair loss by the time your 40. It may be HM or it
may be something else. It sucks for us that are 40 or 50 or 60 but that is life. Some say that HM will be here in less than
5 years.

When I started losing mine in the early-mid 90's even finasteride was'nt heard of.
No point in putting your hopes in HM we've been waiting almost 10 yrs and its still a pipe dream.
As for the original question all you can do is try to prolong keeping your hair but in the longterm it probably is a losing battle.

Nah, the world is going to get all f***ed up, enjoy it while you can.

That already happens, got use to it :) I respect the mayas but don't belive the 2013 is the end :) Losing hair sucks big time for person who all his life got long hair. I've used to it to be one day bald, fact that womens have other views, but i like to have long hair and atleast will give a try, it to early to quit from this battle. Just starting with a regime

The answer to that question like most things, is not as simple as a yes or no. Depending on your genes, luck which represents what science does not understand, and time you might be able to slow it down or best case stop it for a period of years. With current treatments as you age you will still most likely start losing hair again so the answer is for now yes it is ultimately a losing battle for the immediate future. You can still certainly do a lot though now that was not possible just 50 years ago.

I'm 21, if I can get 5 years of hair I can feel more easy about losing it at age 26 then. Maybe I'll try something else later on. What is HM and how long is it going to take to get here?!

I can't accept losing my hair under 40, after that if i have bald spot on my crow or templates is ok but still i can't image myself bald. Got 25 and i'm diffuse thinner, got sides from finasteride which put me in bad position. Let's we all hope that by the 2015 we will have more weapons in our hands, HM will be perfect to come. Today even if you have tons of cash still you will not have scalp full of hair.

Zanzig, if you don't get any side effects from the drugs and got extra cash you can feel save. By 2020 i guess we will have more options to keep our hair. The big 3 is the best option for you know if got less effective add something plus to your regime

Yeah i would say at most if you get success from the big three you got about a 5 - 10 year timeline to enjoy it before it starts tapering off again. Im 24 so i guess if i could hold what i got for 10 years i would be happy to be losing at 34. And also with the science and companies working on a cure today i would say in 5 - 10 years we will have something that will make the big three look pretty bad in comparison. Im holding onto hope for Follica and Histogen by 2015. I dont think personally hm holds much hope in that same time.

Nah, we are far from cure. There are still money to be made here but i also expect better option in the next 10 years. And if the big 3 works good for you without the sides you can relax and wait the new things. If HM get on market on 2015, they will give their best that treatment to be the top solution, something like propecia was in the past 10 years. But i will be happy with the HM plus better anti androgen blocker without sides.
