Skin lightening

I have exposed myself quite a bit to the sun over the years and now my face and the neck seem to have become a bit tanned. The face and the skin is definately darker (redder) than all other parts of the body. Have any of you guys been able to reverse discoloration caused by the sun. I have tried retin a with sunscreen (aware that it makes situation worse without it), but still find the retin a makes the skin redder still. I know a website that sells skin lightener which has 2% hydroquinone acid (heard it can be dangerous) as well as some other skin lightening ingredients like kojic acid. Do you guys recommend an exfoliator to get rid of the uppermost dead skin cells at the top layer as part of the process?
