should I continue?

I am 43 years old and I have been thinning and receding very slowly since about 25 years old. I am taking 1mg of finasteride a day, nizoral. couple times a week tricomin once a day and 5% min. 2x/ day for seven months and I did notice some tiny hairs come in around my hairline but no luck in the area of the horseshoe shapped spot on the top of my head. Its not slick bald just thin and when my hair is wet it really stands out. I am alittle confused because I was under the impression that this regimen would have better results in this area opposed to the hair line. Are the odds against me because of my age and that I started too late? I don't think I went through a shed or it was so suttle that I just dismissed it as natural hairloss thats been progressing over the years. Is this the best I can expect just to slow down the hairloss or is ther still hope? Thanks

I am a little older than you, though not necessarily wiser. I was slick bald for 20 years, and after 2 years of finasteride and other treatments I have good progress, though not a costmetically fantastic result. It can take several years for the hair regrowth cycles to deminaturise the follicles. From my personal experience, you could see a few hairs in the first year, most of those falling out, then a blossoming of vellus, and possibly an optimum result after 6 years. It depends how important the possibility of regaining some hair (certainly it will only be a percentage) justifies self-experimentation with such an optional drug is to you. I have thought about giving up, but my girlfriend is supportive and finasteride may help to prevent prostate cancer, though the dosage is higher for that prognosis of course. Most of us who exchange views on this site are not medical professionals, and there are often conflicting views on the science and ethics and fashion aspects of challenging DHT etc. I must admit that my sex-drive has dipped, even though I have a very sexy younger girlfriend, but have explained the possible association of finasteride in this to her. Having met me three years ago when I had a very low horseshoe, she realises I am onto something, and she is usually too tired after work to make nookie anyway. I hold out hope that the topicals will replace the tablets, but for now I do my duty by all old baldies, to go where no old baldy has gone before. Good luck to you in your search for the hairy pate, it can be done, but it isn't easy, or cheap! You know that by now.
