Shedding at back of head close to neck?

Have now been on a proscar regime (along with minoxidil - have been on this for a few years) for around 4.5 months and am achieving reasonable results - the hair on the top/front of my head has definitely thickened up and seems to be improving.

One thing I have noticed is quite a marked decrease in body hair (I was a bit of a hairy monster before so am not really complaining), but another thing of slightly more concern is that the hair at the bottom of the back of my head appears to be thinning a bit - could this just be a temporary shedding phase?

Have you ever seen/heard of this before? It's not too noticeable yet but the hair on my head just above the nape of my neck does not appear to be growing much at all and is (to me) noticeably thinner. Previously, I needed to shave my neck often and the point at which my "head" hair stopped and my "neck" hair began was almost indistinguishable, but this is no longer the case - almost no hair on my neck and the slight thinning of the hair above my neckline on my head as already described.

I'd appreciate your thoughts/advice.

Thanks a lot.

What is your pattern of hair loss on your scalp? Are your temples receding while your crown is thinning (Common Norwood male pattern baldness)? Or are you losing hair all over the top (Diffuse male pattern baldness)?

There's a 3rd type which is Diffuse Hair Loss but without a pattern - it just affects the entire head, and I heard even the the back of the neck. These are the patients who have no chance at hair transplant surgery that uses hair from the back of the head - because they are balding there as well! The chance of you having that type of baldness is rare.

I think you should go to the Doctor, check for iron deficiency or something else that may be the culprit.

My pattern is pretty standard - thinning at the crown wbut with hardly any recession - rate of hairloss has been very slow over the last 15 years (mid thirties now). The hair at the back of my neck is thinner but I also think its losing a bit of pigmentation too - seems too coincidental that I've started proscar 4 months ago and now this is happening???

Yeah, it's Telogen Effluvium, or a shed. Give it some time, and it'll look nice.

hah! so much for coincidences! i'm in the same boat as you.. and it started when i started taking finasteride too ! .. i never lost hair from that region.. and i dont think it gets better since i've been thinning there since 7 months (duration of finasteride intake) and its getting worse, not better...

i'm thinning diffusely all over as well. sideburn hair almost gone too.. i wonder what the hell finasteride did to my nape..
