Is it prevalent in pieces with longer hair to have more shedding than shorter hair? I ask because I have one a few inches long and there is already a bald spot on it; I have only been wearing it a few weeks.

I find that with stock and custom pieces, with usual freestyle or ventilation of hair, most manufactures do them with lighter density an inch or two above our left temple ( I assume for those parting hair in that direction) I have noticed this is the area which start showing bald spots...when I get a new piece, I look at it underneath, through light, and clearly see that ventilation is less in that area.

Long hair systems have a tendency to shed quicker than shorter systems, but a couple of inches would not be considered "long".
