I've been considering a small procedure for quite some time now. I'm only a NW2, so 1000 grafts or so should do it. I realize that a NW2 is not that terrible, but I'm 35 and don't expect too much future loss (I HOPE!), other than natural recision. I read (and appreciate) all the postings and advice that you all give. It has helped me understand the procedure pros and cons a little better. I want one of the best to do the procedure (just like everyone else). I realize that Dr. Armani is a favorite on this site, but I'm sure there are other great surgeons out there. From my research, I'm starting to lean towards Dr. Shapiro in Minnisota. Any comments or feedback on Dr. Shapiro? Anyone had any experience w/ him? I am only trying to rebuild my hairline, so artistry and realism are of the utmost importance.

Hi Sampson,

Dr. Shapiro is one of the most talented hair transplant surgeons in the world! He did my first hair transplant in 1996 in MPLS and literally freed me from wearing HCM hair systems (wigs). :hairy:

He has been around a very long time, is highly respected by his colleagues, and is one of the most caring, ethical hair transplant doctors I have ever dealt with. Go to some other forums and do a key word search on his name and read what all of his patients have to say.

He does awesome work, very natural hairlines. I know, I am wearing one! Definitely worth traveling to. Take care.

Gillenator,

Thanks for your reply. It is comforting to hear the things you have said about him. As I stated before, I want to go with one of the best and the importance of the artistic design of the hairline cannot be over-emphasized. My next question is this- You said he did your "first" transplant. Why didn't you go back again? Also, why did you need another one? More loss, add density? As much research as I do, I am still never 100% sure of this decision; however, I am 100% sure that I am not happy with the condition of my hair (even though it is not that bad, it is to me). I suppose my main fear is additional loss behind the new hairline, causing additional procedures. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Sampson,

Your welcome. I just read that Dr. Shapiro was awarded the "Golden Follicule Award" from his colleagues at the recent ISHRS meeting In Australia. He received a standing ovation!

I had three seperate procedures largely due to the fact of doing what I could afford at the time and also yes male pattern baldness is progressive. I started finasteride roughly nine years ago so my crown has been pretty stable although it is still somewhat thin. I was a Norwood 4-5 so ultimately I needed 4,000 to 5,000 grafts to achieve my own goals. And yes once anyone starts surgical hair restoration, you end up having to commit to more in the future because eventually we will lose more of the surrounding natural hair. hair transplants will never cure our genetic hairloss.

The reason I did not go back to Dr. Shapiro for my second procedure was because of cost, and yet I knew he was the best in MPLS. But at the time paying child support was much more a priority than my own looks so I was lured to MHR to get more grafts for the $ :hairy: . I had a budget but needed a fair amount of more work. I actually ended up working for them and then moved to the greater Wash DC area to work with Dr. Cole. I then had my third hair transplant with him. As you may have heard he also left MHR. That was an eye-opening experience to say the least. I would never, ever work for a chain hair mill again! :freaked2:

Commissions have no place in medicine! :freaked: You may have read the thread Mahair started on regulating the hair transplant industry. I for one am lobbying against the practice of paying commissions in any practice of medicine :!: Take care.
