Hello! My first post here!
My hair loss isn't that bad, it's more along the lines of thinning right now(unfortunately) at the ripe age of 23...Right before life begins. :sobbing:
Anywho, I want to nip this in the bud right away before it gets worse. What products can I use topically to regrow some of it and add thickness/halt hair loss.
If I don't wash my hair for 2-3 days, I'll lose about 100 hairs(give or take +/- 5-10) in the shower+a few more from showering/styling hair. Not sure if that's a lot or if it's average.

Anyways, let's chug onto the point! Redken Intra force, nioxins DHT killing brother. Some people say that it really works, some say it just adds thickness. What is your thought on this product? Out of everyone who talks about it, I get more positives than negatives. It's relatively new(a few years or so). My hair also responded well to nioxin(Less shed, looked thicker, bunch of little baby hairs began to grow but soon fell out :( ), so I hope I'm one of the lucky few who is super responsive to topicals.

Help me out here as I'm on a college student budget so I don't have massive amounts of money to spend. And propecia is NOT an option, I want to still be able to get it up. :turned:

Sorry but propecia is the only option. The "not able to get it up" thing is very rare... Maybe the libido will get lower, but it's your choice: want to have hair on the head or to be super-extremely horny.

I've been lurking these posts, and many people had other options. The many reports I read indicate that propecia has a high chance of causing ED. Not very rare, and not something I intend to roll the dice with.
So if anyone else has a bit of help, that would be much appreciated.

Not really, me, my 2 brothers and some friends have been long term propecia users without any problems. (I'm 22 btw)

I don't know, the idea of my ding-a-ling possibly never working again kind of scares me. My hair loss really isn't THAT extreme yet, I can easily cover it, long or short and no one would know a thing(no one really notices the hair loss other than me).
I just want to slow it down really, if anything. Unlike most people, if I start losing hair at 33 I won't mind.

So I guess no one has any topicals. Thanks for the help anywho!

I use dutasteride which is about 4 times as potent as finasteride and have no sides. Most of the people who post here don't have any sides. Use finasteride unless you want to be bald in a few years (which you will be shedding that amount of hairs daily). The worst thing that can happen outside like a 1 in 25,000 (or some super high number) scenario worst than can happen is you will have difficulty getting a boner for a month

chance for sides is around 2% chance for sides that last over 3 months is around 2% of the first 2%. No real numbers on permanent sides but IMO they are likely due to something else(psychological or another reason for ED), but its an extremely low percentage of the second 2% either way.

Thanks a bunch for the help, however 2% is still a chance I'd rather not risk. I've read medical reports where it's as high as 8%. So, for what it is, it's not going to be my first line of defense.

P.S for those who are wondering, though this shampoo has a high price tag, that coupled with biotin and multi vitamins, has actually begun producing a ton of little baby hairs, and some of those are actually a lot thicker along the hair line than I previously remember. Also, my hair thinning(not receding) actually begun around a stressful time in my life(Ex gf cheating on me, caused depression and extreme anxiety, so on).
I also haven't been evaluated by the Doctor yet either. My completely crap diet could also be contributing, coupled with smoking...Yep. I'd rather get healthy and try other resources before hopping on the no boner train!

I will shed 100 hairs after showering, and not washing my hair for 3 days. It ain't falling out at an alarming rate. I'll check back with you in a year or so.

Its 2% for sides that do not persist over 3 months.

For permanent sides it is somewhere in the neighborhood of 0.000008% or likely lower.

Please search these forums because all of your methods have been discussed in great detail over the years on this forum and have been found to be ineffective.

Thank you for your stats!
I have read many things, one thing that is for sure is that everyone reacts differently to different things. I'm actually sprouting a few hairs in areas I haven't had hair, and a lot of small hairs are growing like crazy.
I actually spoke to my doctor this past Friday about propecia, and he said the side effects, effect a lot of men...He did not recommend it unless I REALLY needed it. That is coming from a doctor from a national chain hospital(kaiser). So I'm not sure if I should heed advice from someone who is coming from 30 years in dermatology, or people on the internet.
It might sound rude, but I did in fact just ask about the shampoo, there was no need to force the topic of propecia onto me. My hair isn't in such a bad state as it is, nor am I THAT worried about losing hair that I should risk having sexual/mental side effects.

But the shampoo works great OTOH, I'm shedding a whole lot less. Biotin made my skin and nails pretty dang nice, my hair should be the next thing to respond to it.

Anyways, if it gets worse, I'll rogaine it, if it gets worse than that, propecia it is. But my hair has been practically in the same thin state for over a year now, not worsened. So....No pills for me..again...Thank you :)

generic Proscar for a month is less than the price of a value meal at Mcdonalds if not lower. The side effects are massively exaggerated and your penis will not turn into a vagina, at least mine hasn't.

There really isn't any excuse for not taking it unless you don't have $5 a month in spending money or you enjoy going bald.

I've been using Nioxin 1% otc as my only shampoo and using small amounts of it every shower and my scalp is doing excellent and everything is maintaining rather well like clockwork.

The next thing I'm going to do is Minoxidil/Rogain if anything to maybe stimulate ll the vellus hairs into growing again.

I think at least 75% of the reasons people fail at combating hair loss is a lack of dedication to their regimen, I hear stories of people going off and on with Finasteride, mixing different herbal regimens back an forth and rubbing all sorts of stuff onto their scalp while laser combing it then doing something different next week.

You can't get any potential results overnight no matter what you do unless you buy a wig so you have to be dedicated and keep notes of progress. For instance I have a log I fill in once a month where I write a few sentences of my hairs general state.

Most of the time it's the same obviously but I have noticed a very slight continuation of thinning since starting Finasteride which goes to show it doesn't block 100% of hair loss but does slow it quite a bit. Then again this might be attributed to an increase of stress due to losing my job or the seasons getting warmer but by next year I'll have my answer when I compare notes.

It's not an exact science to keep everything in order and combat hairloss but taking Finasteride for 3 months, stopping for 1, starting again for another 2, stopping for 2, starting for 1, etc is not the way to go.
