Seb. Dermatitis from finasteride. What to do

A year into finasteride and 2years into minoxidil, I developed scalp pain and then my hair went haywire. I was shedding astronomical amounts of hair that I could never have even imagined seeing before. My hairline was burning and felt so sore and inflamed. I quit minoxidil thinking that was the cause, but the scalp pain continued until 9 months later when I started micro dosing finasteride.. Did that for a month and I've been off of finasteride for about two weeks now, changed my diet a tad, and scalp pain is minimal..

Anyway, has anyone gone through this and regrow any hair using other treatments? I'm willing to use minoxidil with out pg, but I'll be off of anti androgens now. Was thinking of trying RU and just putting the powder into my minoxidil solution, but does it actually work? I've never seen a thread of anyone just using ru. Usually they are using it in conjunction with minoxidil so I can't be sure if minoxidil is responsible for the results or RU..

The end

I'm also on finasteride for two years and since then have experienced constant scalp pain and shedding. I have a few questions for you if you can help:

- Did your seb. derm. improve while micro-dosing on finasteride? and what micro-dose did you take?

- Now that you have been off of finasteride for two weeks. have you seen the reduction in seb. derm. now compared to when you were micro-dosing?

I'm also thinking about ditching finasteride if it's the cause. The pain is just unbearable!

Hey man,
i was originally on 5mg quarter to 1.25. When I micro dosed, I was cutting those quarted pieces in half and then would take a small edge off of it to try and make it around .5mg. Then tried for around .25 and felt good and then I just didn't refill my prescription. Is your pain almost like a stinging pain? And have you noticed anything with sebum?

I do do have a reduction in pain, but I also stopped eating bread, drinking soda/sugars, etc.. This definitely is helping as well. The weird thing for me is that when my shedding started I also got a rash under my armpit, was getting rashes when applying cologne, etc.. That's why I though it was an allergy to maybe pg in minoxidil.. However, when I cut the dosage, I started relieving some of the symptoms.

If if you feel up to it, try doing it and if you still feel bad, keep going lower until your body pretty much finds its happy place or tells you to keep lowering until you're off.

Yes, the pain is stinging and burning, almost feels like an electric shock when the affected skin area is touched, it is no ordinary itch. When the pain is worst, skin becomes red or blackish and develop thick oily scales and that's why majority of the derms I have been to diagnosed my condition as Seb. Dermatitis. I suspected finasteride being the cause early in the treatment when I read about reflex hyperandrogenecity and I talked to derms about it but they were not of any help on this.

Please you keep me updated about your improvement. I've experimented with changing diet before and it didn't work. If your Seb. derm. improves then it was likely finasteride causing it.

Yeah yours sounds WAY worse than mine, but same condition different scale. Do you use any topical a at all?? Also, my shedding is pretty much the same its been for like the past six months.. I shed like 20-30 showering, another 20 blow drying and if I comb it same numbers. I can tell you that my stoning pain that felt like someone was ripping my hair out is pretty much gone. I think the key (if finasteride is causing it) is to come off of it gradually.

Ill lol keep you updated on how things are going for sure man. I know the hell that seb derm creates dude..

I have tried oral, injections and various topical steroids along with oral antifungals, antibiotics and dozens of medical shampoos with no real relief. Majority of these didn't work and other gave short term relief.
