So guys i know you have seen this graph a ton of times but i am just curious about something. My hair loss isnt very aggressive i been losing hair for almost 19 years now and still got some hair on me so i assume my follicules sensitvity to dht is high but not crazy high or i got an excess ammount of dht, or maybe both. So i was thinking of lowering but not much as we know DHT is essential for the male body.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10495374

From that graph and study i think its logical to assume that 1mg Finasteride DAILY is overkill for our system, it will progressively lower and lower dht to dangerous levels, instead of keeping it at a somewhat safe lower but stable levels.

In the graph you can see that after 1 day of 1mg finasterise the dht levels lowered from ~65 to ~25. That's a huge reduction of a vital hormone, but if the next day you take another 1mg it will lower it even more, and so on. Isnt it obvious that is dangerous?

If i wanna reduce just a bit of dht isnt it safer according to the graph to take 0.5mg, lowering dht from ~65 to ~45 , and takeit every 5 days, to try and keep it at lower but not too low and stable levels?

I wanna know what you guys think.

As far as i know once finasteride binds to a 5ar enzyme it renders it non functional until naturally replaced . Generally the enzymes are replaced if i remember correctly every 5 days so the renewal rate is like 20% every day . If u bind lets say 25 % of enzymes daily u ll eventually reach saturation . I think the dose is like 0.2mg daily or less where finasteride doesnt accumulate but the triala said it doesnt work for hair loss either

Firstly, I've been taking finasteride 1mg daily for over a year without any major sides (and some pleasing hair growth :)).

However this is still a little worrying and confusing. The recommended dosage according to clinical trials, the FDA, or any dermatologists/doctors you speak to is 1mg daily. But then you read other studies that suggest you can get the same results from a lower dosage. This article for example is interesting - https://x2health.com/best-finasteride-dose-hair-loss/ because it says 0.5mg can reduce DHT by the same amount as 1mg and therefore should be just as effective at stopping hair loss. "However because 0.5mg reduces DHT levels by the same amount as 1mg, then side effects are just as likely to occur. After all, a reduction in DHT is precisely what causes side effects in the first place!" Also bear in mind that the study was just on DHT reduction so the extent of 0.5mg on actual hair loss is not known.
The article also states that taking finasteride every other day – perhaps even every third or fourth day – will have the same effect (on DHT) as taking it every day. Again, though, it's a grey area because this could cause fluctuations in hormone levels and therefore make you more prone to sides.

Like I said; this is all a bit confusing and something that I feel needs more study. Despite not having any major sides I do worry about what damage I may be doing to myself in the long term. On the other hand what damage could I do if I changed my dosage to 0.5mg after being on 1mg for so long (or how often I took it)?

That's not how Finasteride works. It's a selective inhibitor of 5-alpha reductase Type 2 and 3. It won't keep reducing DHT past a certain point because 5ar2 and 5ar3 is only responsible for about 2/3rds of the DHT in your body, so you're left with the other 1/3rd, as it lacks inhibitory effects for 5ar1. The difference in DHT reduction is small, for example, with 0.2 mg and 1 mg serum DHT is reduced 69% and 71% respectively. Most studies I've seen cap the serum DHT reduction at around 72% for the 5mg dose. It's not like your regular ol' medicine where the dosages make a significant impact because of Finasteride's mechanism of action. Finasteride forms an irreversible bond with 5-alpha reducatase, which has a slow turnover.

That makes sense, thanks for the explanation. So how do we block just the 5ar1, making it just 1/3 of dht blocked and possibly lowering sides?

I just cant be convinced Finasteride is a safe drug. male pattern baldness is caused by individual sensitivity to dht and not dht itself as it has been proves that many people dont even have that much dht and are bald or high dht and full head of hair. Its all about sensitivy and likely other events happening in the body that lead to inflammation and hardenning of the scalp.

So lowering our dht, a vital hormone by over 60% cant be considered safe and im sure with time it will stop be used to treat hairloss. It doesnt even address the root of hair loss. Thats why people maybe still lose hair after Finasteride, cause their follicules are so sensitive to dht that even after being reduced it still isnt enough to stop it. I also think our sensitivity to it increases with age, somehow. That explains why maybe hairloss increases with age even though dht decreases after a certain point

The reason Finasteride was even developed was because of the discovery of those with the 5ar2 gene deficiency. The types of enzymes are expressed in different tissues after puberty, and type 2 is found in the dermal papilla of the hair follicle, which is partly why Finasteride works to halt hair loss and regrow hair. There have been other inhibitors that were studied and never marketed, including ones that only targeted 5ar1, though they were mainly looked at for their affect on acne because type 1 is expressed in sebum. MK-386 was one such drug, and it showed no efficacy with with hair loss.

Ok so 5ar2 is the "important " one for hair loss? So is there anything that acts on that one specifically and not on both 5ar2 and 5ar3 as finasteride does according to you?

I refer you to my recent thread about Finasteride, check it out. In short, sides are in everyone. Some can be seen, others can be felt, others cannot.

If you are a male with thyroid problems or signs of hypogonadism, Finasteride is suicide. If you are a male with testosterone levels at high ranges, try but know that its efficacy won’t do wonders. The difference comes in one that starts in very early stages and one that’s starts late. For calcification, fibrosis and miniaturization purposes.

The splitting of dosage, splitting of days and topical use are all broscience moronic attempts of people to “trick” things. There are no tricks, things are pretty straightforward.

Wich thread is it?

Im not trying to trick anything. I just think finasteride decreases a crazy amount of Dht that is very important for us. Even at 0.25mg it has been showed to reduce a lot. I just wanna figure out if there is a way to reduce it but not so much and if it my specific kind of hair loss would sitll benefit from it. Im sure not all kinds of hair loss are so aggressive and need so much dht reduced
