I have receding hairline and thinning on the top. Should I be even trying Rogaine? The instructions clearly say that it is specifically for vertex problems(top of head). What's the alternative, then?

It's an FDA issue. Generally hair at the temples is more susceptible to DHT or even higher Testosterone levels (multiple theories on this) and harder to regain.

try it and see, it worked for me for a number of years for regrowth. it all depends on the person, but by all means try. remember you may experience a shed of current hairs, but thats a sin the minoxidil is working. jump on finasteride for better results as well

I use Rogaine (Minoxidil) for my frontal baldness, it works. The instructions say it's specifically to be used on the vertex and not for a receding hairline or frontal baldness because the clinical trials were done on the crown area, so the manufacturers can only legally claim the medicine is to be used there. You're more than free to use the treatment off-label on other areas of your scalp where needed, not only on your vertex.

It certainly does work on the front. It most likely won't regrow your hairline to a nw1 tho. If your frontal baldness is aggressive. I use 4 topicals on my hairline per day. And I'm not a nw1.
