I have done alot of reading on this site and have started to redeed at the temples and possibly at the crown, I would like to maintain what I have and would be happy with that. Could anyone tell me the best route to go down in order to achieve this and the possible side affects that come with it? Thank you.

finasteride, 1mg daily is all you need.

the main side effects are "ball-ache" and lowered sex drive. The ball ache seems to be fairly common - it occurs after about a week and disappears after a few days. Not everyone gets it.

The lowered sex drive is less common, the official stat is 2% which some people dispute.

don't be put off by the scare stories, there are a lot of paranoid psychosomatic people on here who would probably get side effects from hot lemon drinks.

give it a go, and if you don't like it just quit and try something else - there are other options. However I recommend this one because it's cheap, easy and probably the most effective.

I use finasteride, and have no side effects.

Agree with flimflam. finasteride is best for maintenance. I have been using so far for two months with no side effects at all. 2% Nizoral Shampoo is a cheap and easy addition to the finasteride.

oh yeah i forgot Nizoral/Nizorelle as Wash n' Gone just mentioned. I have seen it in Boots and Sainsburys.

You can go to your doctor, explain the situation and they might write you a prescription for Propecia. (I had to argue with my doctor before she wrote me one!). Propecia is 1mg finasteride and is the "official" product but it's very expensive - about £120 for 3 months supply.

or you could try this:

I think they just offer you Propecia, not sure on the costs but it might be easier than going to the doctor.

The *other* thing you can do, which is what a lot of people on this forum do, is buy Proscar which is FIVE mg of finasteride and split the pill into quarters or fifths. This will save you a ton of cash.

You can buy Proscar online, for example, here:
http://www.inhousepharmacy.co.uk/hair-loss/proscar.html

You can get a years supply for about £150. It's exactly the same drug made by the same company.

Shedding: you may shed with finasteride. I personally haven't, not noticably so anyway. I've noticed most people complaining of shedding are on minoxidil at the same time. Even if you do, it's a good thing cos it means its working :)

I use Boots and it is £90 for a 12 week supply. Consultations are included in the cost.
