Reasonable Expectations?

I have recently taken the plunge and buzzed my hair. I now have a grade 1.5 (back & sides) and a grade 2 on top. Happily my head is a reasonable shape for this and no nasty marks have been revealed, so it's going to be a permanent change. I'm not at peace with hair loss, though. I think better treatments will be available in 5 years or so, but that's a long time to wait when your hair is going now.

My hair is naturally fine. I've receded at the sides, but the shape of the recession is actually not a problem so I don't mind that. However, I am thinning badly at the crown and at the front (thicker "tuft" at the front). The thinning areas still have a lot of hair, but it's become colourless and incredibly fine over the years.

Experiments with my (previously abandoned) Spectal DNC have shown that applying it with this hair cut is actually really convenient. So I restarted using it, along with my (also previously abandoned) Revita shampoo. I've been using them both for about 2 weeks now. The thin areas seem thinner still now, but I expected that - if my hair wasn't cut so short I'm sure I'd have noticed shedding.

I'm considering going back on Propecia. I was on it for many years, but dropped it last year because I was worried about the effects of long term usage. I may go back on it, or I may not. I'm just not convinced yet.

So I don't need to grow new hair, I just need to get all (or a significant proportion) of the ultra-fine hairs in the thinning regions back to normal. What's the likelihood of achieving this?
