Background:

I always have long hair, I rarely get haircuts. I let it grow out to around shoulders and once there I eventually get a haircut which gets it to eyebrow length for front and still touching neck in back. After high school I noticed after getting a haircut that one could see the temple skin through the sides of head. At first I thought, oh it is thinning slightly but I will never lose it. I have always had thick hair!

So I simply covered it up with combing and let it grow out over a year or two, and next time I got a haircut it was same situation, but perhaps slightly worse. Again I did not worry about it, thinking I will never lose my hair.

Now today for the first time I pulled my hair back to really examine my hair. Before I never bothered to look closely because it looked fine to me. My long hairstyle is parting to the sides, so the missing hair is hidden regardless. But I noticed huge balding in my sides. (FIRST TWO PICTURES)

NOW I AM AFRAID TO GET A HAIRCUT, AS IT WOULD LIKELY EXPOSE ITSELF

What is next? Will I go completely bald soon? Is it possible that this is the worst extent it will go?

Family:

When looking at a twin brother he has the same baldness, but it is not as pronounced. Other brother also has it but not as pronounced. Perhaps this is due to severe stress and depression I have had for the past 5 years. Father also has the same area missing, but it is not nearly as far or as noticeable. I do not know what mothers side is like.

What I do with my hair:

I have to wash my hair after work because it gets very greasy, dirty, sweaty, and stinky. For more than 8 years I have been using "Head and Shoulders 2 in 1". When I use it I see a ton of hair in the drain. In the past month when I noticed my missing hair I only try to use it once a week because of paranoia. When I just wet my hair at least not a ton of hair is in the drain.

I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO USE FOR SHAMPOO OR WHAT CONDITIONER EVEN IS, so advice here is helpful

I will put more pictures in, after wet hair. But be warned the light is making it look very white sometimes where it looks bald but rather just light reflecting off hair.

...

I would like advice or even simple observations. I do not feel I can afford going to a doctor or whoever. I only have minimum wage job.

Thanks to anyone to reply. Even with a tip for hairstyles! (I love having long hair, although I simply have not cared about how I looked until this happened to me)

....

My depression finally was leaving until I noticed this and now I am stressed as ever.
