Question about T/Gel (coal tar) and Hair loss

I have been using Neutrogena T/Gel Extra Strength for several weeks now to control my seborrheic dermatitis. I used it for a while in high school, but have been using shampoos such as Nizoral and the Ginger Body Shop Shampoo recently, in part due to their alleged benefits on hair loss; however, they are not nearly as effective for me, and Nizoral even makes my scalp worse. In fact, I think I may have mild psoriasis of the scalp as opposed to seborrheic dermatitis because it has never responded well to anti-fungal treatments that are supposed to control seb derm.

I came across a lawsuit online where a woman using T/Gel sued Neutrogena because it had caused her to break out in a severe allergic reaction and experience hair loss. This worried me somewhat, because I plan on making it a part of my regimen to control inflammation, while treating my hair loss with Propecia (basically the same regimen that the people in the Propecia trials used).

I know I am not allergic to the product because I have used it with no adverse effects in the past. Do you think any hair loss stemming from the use of this product would be in conjunction with an allergic reaction? The fact that Merck used T/Gel in the Propecia trials puts my mind at east somewhat, because they obviously weren't too worried about it causing hair loss. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

not if you suffer from extreme scalp itching and it's the only thing you've found that helps, including nizoral. believe me, I know.

If you read viewtopic.php?f=32&t=41243 you might get something out of it..

But Im no expert..but If you scalp is better with Tgel than with other shampoes that could be reasons enough? I used nisim and it made my scalp itch, so I switched to the body shop shampoo with ginger and no my scalp is quite nice:)

About allergic reactions you should prob talk to a good/updated derm or google alot

That's a very interesting topic you posted. I wonder if maybe Merck knew something the rest of us didn't about coal tar and that's why they used it in the Propecia trials.

How often do you use the Ginger Shampoo? I was rotating it with Nizoral, and Nizoral seemed to make my scalp itch, so I wonder if I just used that alone if it would be any better. I've also heard of pine tar shampoo, which is supposed to be more mild and gentle enough for everyday use. I might as well give them a try, but at least I know I will always have T/gel to fall back on if nothing else works. Thanks for the input.

every 2-3day--depends how bissi my life is..it leaves my scalp dry, but not flacky so its kinda nice..I have ordered the T/gel shampo to rotate with bodyshop shampo..just dont hope the t/gel smell to bad.

Many people get itch from Nizoral..but maybe they leave it in for to long..I dont know,
But I have read that P O in the bodyshop shampo has a similar effect as keto..but not as powerfull

As for the woman thats allergic to something in tgel..to bad for her, after what I read it has helped alot of people and my derm recommends coal tar shampo if people got a itchy scalp :)
