Question about diffuse thinning

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere so forgive me if this is redundant to some of you. I'm 25 and i've noticed that my hair is thinning rapidly. The thing that confuses me is that, although i think my hair has been thinning for a while now, my hairline has not moved at all, nor have my temples receded. Is this normal? Is this what is considered diffuse? My impression is that with normal male pattern baldness, even diffuse thinning, my hairline should have receded at least a bit.

Also, if this is diffuse male pattern baldness, is there a specific drug or regimen that works better for diffuse thinning versus normal hairline recession? Someone told me that propecia doesn't work well at all for diffuse thinning.

Yes welcome to the Diffuse Club. We're better than the other baldies.

It's normal for your hairline and temples not to recede much if at all if you are a diffuse thinner. I have great hairline and temples and most of my loss is on the top of the head, spread out.

The person who told you that propecia doesn't work well at all for diffuse thinning was wrong and misguided. Propecia works for all pattern and non-pattern forms of male androgenetic alopecia, which is what you presmuably have. In fact, Propecia should work better for diffuse thinners because although your balding area is more spread out than people who have pattern loss, chances are that your loss areas are not as miniaturized as those who are thinning in a pattern, since yours is more spread out. Sorry if that sounds convoluted but I hope you got the point.

As for treatments, well you can use all the same treatments that normal pattern baldies can you use. I recommend using Propecia for halting the bald process, Nizoral shampoo every 3 days for good scalp health, and the third part of this Big 3 regimen is minoxidil(main gredient in Rogaine). They sell generic forms of Rogaine as well. Now Rogaine is just as effective for diffuse thinners as it is for normal pattern baldies. The only downside for us is that since our balding is more spread out, minoxidil is more of a hassle to apply since we have a wider area to cover. But in fact minoxidil may be even more effective for you because if you just noticed your diffusing then your hair is probably not as miniaturized as some people's on here, so it's not as far gone, and minoxidil has a better chance at rejuvenating some of those hair follicles.

So don't get scared, stick around here, read some posts, ask some more questions, and see a dermatologist if you can to confirm that you actually do have male pattern baldness. If so, and if he's competent, he'll tell you to get on propecia and maybe rogaine as well. Ask him to write you a script for Proscar if he can because Proscar is 5 mg of finasteride and Propecia is 1. But Proscar is cheaper because you can cut it into fourths or fifths with a pill cutter and take 1.25 mg or 1 mg a day. You can save $400+ a year this way easily.

If you get on Propecia then you can expect to keep your current amount of hair for many years to come at least.

Good luck, and nice name by the way.

Thanks, that was a very thourough and encouraging reply. About what percent of balding men are diffuse? Is it more common in younger men?

i would say propecia would likely work best for diffuse thinning, given that it is dht male pattern baldness caused

I have no idea and I don't think it is. I think it just depends on your genes. If your relatives that you got the gene from were diffuse then you will prob end up being diffuse as well. I got it from my dad who was diffuse and he got it from his dad who was diffuse. We all have the same balding pattern but I'm the only one who's been on meds for it.

just that propecia is documented to work best on regrowth on the crown and vertex, rather then hairline regrowth... where diffuse thinning occurs

diffuse thinning typically occurs on top while the hairline stays intact I thought?

My hairline and temples haven't receded much if at all, and all my loss is across the top of my head, especially the frontal top, but all behind the hairline. So I'm diffuse. I have heard of many people with the same "pattern", or would that be "non-pattern".

Is the frontal top area considered in the same area as the hairline as being hard to regrow with propecia? I always thought it was considered more part of the top and vertex.

And as I said earlier since in most people the diffuse thinning is not as severe as the pattern, people have a better chance at regrowing if they are early diffuse.

The reason why I was confused by what you said, bubka, is that you said that propecia would work great for diffuse but then you said that propecia doesn't work as well for hairline regrowth where diffuse thinning occurs.

I almost wish i was loosing my hair the normal way, hairline thinning but where i do have hair, its thick. i'm just scared that i'm going to go from having hair all over to having no hair anywhere very quickly. Would be quite a surprise to my friends for me to go from no noticable baldness to que ball in one day

I'm with you. I just noticed my hair loss about a month ago and by looking I've easily already lost 50% of my hair, although I had a lot of hair to begin with. While normal male pattern baldness creeps up on you, diffuse shellshocks.

I'm thinking i should just shave my head now and get used to it. Just sick of worrying about when it's going to get so thin that people start to notice, whether i can get my hair wet in public, and whether i should get my hair cut. i'm using minoxidil but i just haven't figured out whether i'm happy enough with the thickness of my hair to maintain it.
