Hi all,

I've been using Proscar now for about 4 years or so.
It never has caused me concern. Well, there are some side effects such as sore testicles, weak erections, that might be attributed to it but might be attributed to external effects.

Right now I have a long term girlfriend and since her and I are very sexually compatible, she makes me very hard. I "come" rather copiously too. When I masturbate it's mostly just routine, and so I lose my erection thereafter rather rapidly.
However, after sex and coming hard, I often keep it for a few minutes.

I have always attributed sexual side effects to stress (living in a population dense area where you're concerned about people hearing you is not fun!). Also, when we were using condoms, I always fumbled to get the package open, etc. which tended to kill my erection.
Once the birth control pill situation came into play, the quality of sex shot up dramatically.

Anyway, I have experienced some effects such as gradual weight gain in the stomach and chest area, some ball pain every so often that mysteriously goes away, and whathaveyou.

But curiously enough, I feel better and more healthy now than I did when I was 21 (I'm just turning 25). My sex life is better now, and I think it has to do with confidence from having more sexual experience, and from loving my girlfriend and being in a great relationship with such a wonderful girl.

Sorry to ramble...
I took Proscar and now the irreversible effects information is scaring me to death. Which sucks because I don't want to keep taking it, nor do I want to keep going bald. But the studies of what it does to people long term are horrifying.

So I want to talk to my doctor and ask him. Sometimes, as people know, talking to your doctor is an apathetic experience in which he or she just grunts and shrugs and waves you off.

I want to know - are there any tests I can request to know if the effects of Proscar are present in my body? Like, if Proscar has affected me negatively, will it show up in blood work, or would I only be able to "feel" it?

What tests should I ideally be getting? I'm thinking testosterone level check, but I don't know what else.

So yeah, I'm curious if blood work/tests will tell me what the drug is doing to me, and if I decide to keep taking it, if regular blood work will keep side effects at bay?

Your doctor should hopefully check your hormones. If you go in there and just tell him you are a having a few issues it's likely he will test the absolute minimum. If you genuinely are concerned, visit propeciahelp.com and look at the advised blood tests.

Alright, this is my opinion on this:

I think you are having great success, obviously finasteride is working for you. What's more important is, you got a great woman by your side and you enjoy life with her. You experience minor sides which could have to do with finasteride. You are scared. You have already gone a long way, it's not like you are in week 2. If you think back you probably enjoyed the last 4 years of which finasteride was a part.

I advise you to go on enjoying your life. Read the success stories here and continue your life. Go away from these forums, you know what you do, you are on a successful regimen. If you lose more hair and want to do something come back. If you want to update your status with pics do that. Other than that, don't let it get in your head. Focus on yourself and your girlfriend.

I know there are bad, very bad stories and experiences with finasteride out there. I know Joe91 you are one of them. I'm not taking this lightly. I think and hope that they and you are a very small minoritiy. I wish them all the luck in the world, may they recover and enjoy life to their fullest. But there are millions out there for whom the drug is working. And I would just focus on these cases and try not let it get into your head.

I wish you all the best!
