Is it better to see a dermatologist, hair transplant doctor, or just a general physician or does it basically not matter? I think I want to see about trying propecia and not sure who to see.
Can I call the doctor then a year later to get the prescription renewed since I basically have to use it forever? Im guessing there are no tests or anything they can do aside from ask if it runs in my family

I personally went to a doctor recommended by the IAHRS (http://www.iahrs.org/) . This group was started as a consumer advocacy group for people with hair loss by a guy named Spencer Kobren. He also has a site called thebaldtruth.com which has a forum like this one. If you're looking for a hair loss doctor in your area you can hop on that forum and ask the people over there.

I guess it doesn't really matter who you get the prescription from though if thats all you're looking for. Also, you could always order the generic version "Finpecia" from inhousepharmacy.biz which is an online pharmacy. I myself have ordered Nizoral from there a few times when supply was low in my area, and have also just ordered Finpecia from there as I am starting up finasteride again soon.

Do UK GPS even prescribe the likes of finasteride?

I thought it wasn't available on the NHS....

National Insurance is enough for me, but I'd love to afford private someday...

I would suggest one thing.....get blood work done BEFORE starting finasteride. There is a very very very small chance that you'll get long-term side effects, but if you do....it will help tremendously to have a baseline that you can show your doctor so that you have something to shoot for.

Having said that, I don't know that there's a specifically right person to talk to about getting finasteride. It's pretty easy to diagnose hairloss (take pictures, etc), and you can get finasteride with a script.

I think my problem is my hair was so thick before the hair loss does not look that bad to someone that just sees me. So even though its much less dense a doctor that is dumb will just look and say your not losing hair dont worry about it. You need to lose like half your hair before its noticeable to others and my head really itches where I am losing hair. I can see the miniaturized hairs so they are there I dont imagine problems so I can waste money treating them. The problem with that is as of today there is no way to get hair back and its possible there might not ever be. So it still seems preventing is better even if it carries risks of its own.
Maybe I can ask about getting blood work because honestly I wanted to see the doctor about getting my cholesterol and other things checked anyways so maybe they can check DHT, estrogen, and other things along with it?

At least end of next year propecia goes generic that should help a lot with the price. Most doctors would only prescribe propecia and 60 a month is pretty steep in my opinion for something you use for life.
