Propecia or hair transplant?

I'm in the beginning stages of hair thinning, a little bit of a receeding hairline, and thinness in the crown. What would be a better option? Propecia or Hair Restoration? Obivoulsy a hair transplant would be cheaper in the long run, and I think I could get away with a small procedure, I'd just need a little bit of work done on the right side of my hairline and a little done in the crown. I know that won't stop any future loss, but I think I could get a procedure done for around $1,500 and that's around the cost of 2 yrs worth of Propecia. What do you think is a better option?

I think you need to do a lot more research on your options.

hair transplant's and propecia go hand and hand. If you get a hair transplant, you need to get on propecia to help prevent more loss. You should not get a hair transplant with minimum loss because you will lose the hair behind the transplant and it will look ridiculous. Please do more research. Get on propecia and put a hair transplant aside for now

Brick is absolutely right.

Try Propecia first. hair transplant are risky, painful, expensive and results could be terrible if the surgeon is not experienced. The worst thing that can happen with finasteride is loss of libido. And if you want to save money, buy Proscar and cut it into 4ths.

Thanks for the advice...I've been doing a lot of reading on here and I've seen some horror stories about finasteride..so I'm kinda nervous about that....is there any real difference between Nizoral 1% and 2%? I saw on here that 2% can cause liver probs down the road, is that accurate?

stop reading into these "horror stories" it's just going to fill your head with crap..why do people continue reading these stories beats me.

just take the damn drug and see for yourself that there is nothing to worry about.. most people that make a big stink about side-affects are just psychologically crazy and believe it's impacting them.

This is true and something I have noticed. Those people who overly worry about side effects and spend time on the p****help forum before even taking the drug tend to get side effects! The brain is a powerful thing, and I'm not saying everyone that gets side effects has imagined them, but some people do imo.

I would agree with that, I'm sure ppl do psyche themselves out before they even take it, however some of these testimonials can't be ignored..I think I was on the site that you kinda referred to in your post, and those were some scary things to read..even ppl that's been on it for years have been getting some bad effects from it, I'm sure all these ppl aren't making those stories up, it seems like some ppl on here won't recognize or are blind to the fact that bad side effects are pretty likely from it..so I don't know what to do, I'm kinda split on it.
Is there any difference between Nizoral 1% and 2% ? I read on here that liver probs down the road can possibly occur from 2%, is that true?

I've never heard that about Nizoral before, been using it for 7 years and no probs, that's the best I can offer on that.

I wouldn't say bad side effects are likely from finasteride, not at all. It may seem that way when reading the other forum as people complain loudly when something doesn't work, but are much quieter when something works.

Most people get minor side effects that go away within 3 weeks, and the ones that get side effects that persist find symptoms disappear after discontinuing the drug, the people who get persistent problems even after quitting is a very small minority, but I acknowledge that it can happen as the other forum testifies, but it is a small minority, something which the other forum amplifies and makes it seem like a strong possibility, which is misleading.

I was reading some of your old posts...I'm around your age if I read your posts right, I'm 29 and recently I noticed I'm starting to get a small bald spot in my crown and it's really upsetting me, which is why I'm seriously considering the hair transplant to maybe fill that in, I saw your were gonna do that as well, how did it work out for you? Also have you ever had any side effects from finasteride?

Yeah I got a 1800 graft transplant, but I had it all in the front and sides, left the back, so I still have a thin patch there. I'm 5 months post op now and the transplanted hair is growing, I shaved my head to a grade 4 all round and looking forward to more growth.

The Doctor suggested leaving the back for now, and I preferred to redefine my hairline, I'm a NW3V, V for vertex thinning.

I'd get on the propecia as you will be advised to use it if you get a H/T anyway, best to see what that can do for you before getting surgery.

I had minor side effects when I started for 3 weeks, nut ache, watery seaman but it went away. Been on it for 7+ years, had a spell a few months ago where I struggled to get an erection, and was thinking of quitting and thought it was because of finasteride, but it went away on its own and i've had no problems since, so probably a case of wanting to blame finasteride because it's the obvious culprit, but I know now it was just due to stress.

Propecia is not perfect but it is the best drug we have, serious long term side effects are rare, they can happen but the odds are against it.

Back in 2002 when I was trying to put together a regimen it took me months to decide to finally get on finasteride, I didn't join this forum until a year or two later cos some of the negative propecia posts scared me shitless, although I was more worried about it not working than giving me side effects.

Interesting story, especially that you've been on finasteride for 7 years. Did finasteride arrest your hairloss where it was, any regrowth?

Minor regrowth, maintained what I had well for 7 years....there could have been some loss, but very little otherwise it would be easier to tell. The big 3 has worked, and continues to work, very well for me, I should be a NW5 five years ago. :)
