he

My name is kuit and i've got some questions and the answers of it are hard to find. I've got telogen effluvium for 6 months now and i'm shedding less now. December 2011 i've taken a overdose medication, in april/mei i lost 17 kilograms of weight with a strict diet and too much sport. august i've tried to commit suicide with a second overdose; i'm sick now of it for 4 months. yes it's been a hell for more than a year. Before this i've used ssri and many more medications for 7/8 years.

now i find some miniaturized hairs on the back, top and sides; all over.

Can my "life style" cause miniaturized hair? will this grow back normal?

p.s. in my other posts you can find pictures of my hairline.

I’m unable to detect hair loss your photos but I hope this helps

Telogen effluvium
Although telogen effluvium usually resolves spontaneously, it may precipitate or aggravate androgenetic alopecia in predisposed individuals. Discontinuing the causative drug may not improve hair thinning and treatment with finasteride or topical minoxidil may be necessary.
Drugs reported to produce hair loss
a Established by multiple reports or proved by rechallange.
b May produce permanent alopecia
c May produce anagen effluvium
d May produce androgenetic alopecia
e May produce telogen effluvium 3 months after discontinuation.

ACE inhibitors (captopril, enalapril, moexipril, ramipril)
Allopurinol
Amiodarone
Amphetamines a
Analgesics/antinflammatories (ibuprofen,indomethacin, naproxen)

Retinol (vitamin A) a
Retinoids (acitretin, etretinate, isotretinoin) a
Risperidone
Salicylates
Serotonin uptake inhibitors (fluoxetin, paroxetine) a
Spironolactone
Sulphasalazine
Tamoxifene
Terbinafine
Terfenadine
Thiamphenicol

Tricyclic antidepressants (amytriptiline desipramine, doxepin, imipramine, maprotiline)
Triparanol
Vasopressin

Mood stabilizers
Lithium causes hair loss in up to 20% of long-term users, which may be a consequence of lithium-induced hypothyroidism. Hair straightening has also been associated with lithium intake. Valproic acid and divalproex frequently cause dose-dependent hair loss that may affect up to 12% of patients. Carbamazepine on the other hand is only very rarely responsible for hair loss.

Antidepressants
Telogen effluvium has been mainly reported in patients taking the serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine. It usually occurs a few months after the beginning of therapy but can occasionally develop even more than 1 year after the beginning of treatment. Hair loss has been occasionally reported with tricyclic antidepressants but not with mono- amine oxidase inhibitors.

Thankyou

When i scratch on my scalp i can find many miniaturized hair on top and the back, i also had folliculitis.. i'm wondering if all this can cause miniaturized hair..? i thought miniaturized hair can only be cause by Androgenetic Alopecia

miniaturized hair + shedding is normally a bad sign - there is a chance your Telogen Effluvium is setting off (starting/accelerating) your Androgenetic Alopecia and it can affect back and sides
- u may have to see a Hair Transplant doctor about a diagnosis

how can miniaturized hairs on the back be Androgenetic Alopecia?

Does hair miniaturization always indicate Androgenetic Alopecia?

i remember earlier last year there was a discussion on thinning back and sides - apparently it does happen

minaturization does not always indicate Androgenetic Alopecia - if u take a drug that induces hair growth by raising E / Decreasing T / promoting hair growth - when the user stops, their hair will miniaturize

i've used many different ssri's for a long time and it will cause folliculitis for sure. Lexapro is the worst ssri with alopecia side effect for sure.

Can miniaturization be caused by toxins? like a overdose? Major emotional stress for a longer period like a year, folliculitis and illness cause the overdose?

I appreciate your help! thankyou

Just going back to basics:
Drug-induced telogen effluvium mainly involves premature interruption of hair growth with an early entry of anagen follicles into the resting phase, leading to a noticeable increase in hair shedding 2 to 3 months later.

Can miniaturization be caused by toxins?

not that I know of - however

Direct toxic insult to the rapidly dividing hair follicle cells in Anagen Phase leads to an abrupt cessation of mitotic activity.

That is - your growing hairs are falling out not your miniaturised hair

Called Anagen effluvium

Major emotional stress for a longer period like a year, folliculitis and illness cause the overdose?

yes, but most studies are on women

Acute telogen effluvium is defined as hair loss present for less than 6 months, whereas in chronic telogen effluvium, excessive hair shedding lasts for longer than 6 months. Several conditions and physiologic states lead to acute telogen effluvium including systemic disease, drugs, fever, psychoemotional stress, weight loss, childbirth, iron and vitamin D deficiencies, and inflammatory scalp disorders.

You might also be interested in the Pull Test for hair shedding:
Grasp 50 to 60 strands of hairs in 3 separate areas of the scalp by thumb, index, and middle fingers and gently sliding the fingers along the hair shafts. With this gentle traction, if more than 10% (6 or more hairs from a single area) of grasped hairs are pulled out, then the test is positive. A positive test indicates increased telogen hairs, which may be the case in chronic telogen effluvium or androgenetic alopecia.

Thank you for your helpfull information!

i've telogen effluvium and lose very thick hair but i find when i pluck my hair thin broken fuzzy pigmentless, sometimes even gray hair. Also on the back of my head that the 'permanent' zone is.

But wow i've a serious case of, drug induced disease (auto-immune lupus), 2x dangerous toxination by drugs , serious psychoemotional stress for like a year now, rapidly weightloss like 37.4 lbs in 6 weeks, cold turkey quiting antidepressants.
I've used ssri for 8 years with a lot of other medication. Not really seeing daylight for a month of 4.

But can this al lead to a little miniaturization overall? I've been Telogen Effluvium maybe 6 months to a year, now the shedding starts to stop. Can i damaged the follicle shaft diameter? will this return to normal?

any hair loss caused by everything you just described will almost certainly return to normal - it may take another 6 months.

permanent alopecia only occurs with stuff like <tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-alpha antagonist> and <human epidermal receptor (HER) and the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors>

i've read a number of studies on stress/drug-induced hairloss and a number of hormones can affect hair but none of the studies mentions what the cosmetic outcome is - as in what's happening on the outside. So i don't know about the miniaturization or damaging of the follicle

I was on an ssri for four years. I must be the opposite because while on them my hair was fine. as soon as I came off them my hairline receded! I also gained 4 stone the first year being on them. so I was overweight. 16 stone at 5'10! I'm not at 12.9 stone and again my hairline seems to of changed. I cannot help but think it's down to my test levels increasing thus converting more into dht. apparently the more overweight you're the more estrogen your body creates...any truth to this? I don't understand though how male pattern baldness can be activated by an ssri?
