Not trusting Big Pharma. Can we trust treatments?

I've read extensively on Big Pharma, pharmaceutical companies, one of the wealthiest businesses, if not THE wealthiest worldwide.

If their main interest is profit, and overlooking side-effects, and probably mis-informing, and trying to push drugs to people, WHY ON EARTH should we trust the treatments they've given us so far like finasteride/dutasteride, even rogaine?

Yeah, they have to work, somewhat, for them to pass tests and be approved by the FDA, etc, but lord only knows what damage they're also doing to our bodies, not to mention long term effects.

EVERY drug has side effects, and possibly negative affects on our whole system.

Are we trusting Big Pharma out of depseration or hope, or because we really believe in the treatments?

They're all we've got so far, but something tells me, not to fully trust that these treatments are very effective AND safe.

I still take the treatments and what not, and won't stop it because of my own paranoia, but if you guys ever do some research or read and study into all that goes on in our world, in terms of business, you'd be shocked, and it's obviously ALL about the money, so why should we be so trusting in these treatments?

Uneducated, and always hopeful optimists assume just because you can BUY it, and just because they sell it, that it's good for you and that works.

Do you really think these guys care if we regain our hair or not?

They just want us to be life customers.

Let's face it, we're already life customers if we use rogaine and propecia/avodart, etc. Once we stopp the treatments, we lose what we regained. They have us by the hook.

Not even hair transplants guarantee that hair will stay there, and that gets exremely expensive and what not.

We're basically F8cked.

If cancer patients, and aids patients and other people who desperately need cures, are more or less being played by Big Pharma, who most likely wants them to be lifelong customers to the drugs they prescribe as treatments instead of cures,

why in god's name do you think WE would fare ANY different?

IF they produce a cure, they lose money big time.

If they produce treatments, they get money their whole lives.

One can argue, but why would they want to keep people sick, what if people die off and that's bad for the economy yadda yadda. Well, not exactly. As long as they're kept alive on treatments, they still work and are productive in the world, AND they feed $$$ to big pharma.

And you guys really think a cure will come out?

That's NOT to say that it wont, or someone won't discover SOMETHING, but no matter what happens, nothing will EVER come easy or cheap all because of the corrupt nature of Big Pharma.

I hate to say we're F*Cked, but I think we are in a sense.

Hopefully it's just my own paranoia, but you can't completely disagree with all of the brief points I made.

Oh God not this argument again!

The main interest of every business is profit. In a capitalist system, economic agents earn a profit by risking their capital in some form of economic activity. Researching and developing drugs is an economic activity, like any other. It also happens to be a hugely expensive, time-consuming one... the cost of bringing new drugs to market is estimated between $500m to $2 billion.

We don’t like Big Pharma, because it's big and powerful and makes money out of people's sickness. On the other hand, we need drugs to treat our various ailments, big and small, and I haven't yet thought of a better alternative to a capitalist system. I think the Russians and North Koreans have tried; didn't quite work out, as I remember.

The drugs business is self-liquidating. Coca-Cola can make huge profits on the same sugary drink for decades. But unless drugs firms continually bring enough new products to market to replace lost revenues when patents expire, they will shrivel and die, because when patents expire, prices collapse thanks to generic competition. It's a little like oil companies, who have to continue discovering new fields.

If you want absolute, perfect certainty about any treatment, you'll never get it. It is impossible to test hypotheses linking a given treatment to every conceivable human disease. At least finasteride has a biological 'model'. All we can say at the moment is that individuals with a genetic deficiency of Type II 5 alpha reductase have urogenital defects at birth and biochemical abnormalities but have no other clinically important disorders (and some advantages) as a consequence of Type II 5?-reductase deficiency.

Very good answer and thank you.

But I really hate humanity, for having to be this sad, that it had to create economic and political systems just to survive/thrive throughout history.

Being that we obviously have enormous intellectual potential, we could have made this planet into an extreme utopia.

However the picture around us is drastically different isn't it?

I still think very simply in these terms: Evil = bad life conditions, good = utopian conditions. It's that simple, what "good" force do you think is behind ANY capitalism based business, or any business in general? None, b/c it's about profit at the expense of environment, people, etc.

No soul required. Just, intellectual drive.

Are people REALLY born being intellectual drones, who only think about creating things for the purpose of making money?

I mean, maybe I'm largely average and uninspired, but it seems that humanity has lost its purpose, and we are WAY too advanced and post-modern for any type of change or turning back, it's basically going to get worse and worse, rich richer poor poorer, till god knows what.

Anyways I'm ranting.

Point is, I don't think anyone out there gives a hoot whether we keep the hair on our heads or not, b/c in the big picture it isn't in their interest, b/c it all comes down to money.

I think the human race is evil. lol.

An average personn who has hair loss, or cancer, etc etc simply wants help, and then move on with their lives. But nooooooo, big powerful mean corporations don't care and want your money.

When you're dealing with satan, which is basically most of the world around us, it's just not very clear to see, do you REALLY think you'll win? lol.

I await the day when it all hits the fan, and what not. If that ever happens, which I don't think it will.
