Hi all,
Sorry for the vague title and the lack of photos but I was hoping someone would have some advice as to what I can do regarding my hair loss. Also post is kinda long but tldr at bottom.
A bit of background: I'm 21 and I started noticing my temples receeding at around the age of 19. Within what must have been a few weeks when I was 19, about half and inch suddenly thinned out and eventually disappeared on the left side of my hairline. That really freaked me out and so I started on finasteride. That seemed to hold off the temple recession on that side of my hairline for quite a while. One thing I noticed after I started taking finasteride is that my mild acne basically disappeared completely, which was cool. Initially I had some sexual side effects but these went away after about a month.
Fast forward to now and I'm still taking finasteride (no minoxidil or nizoral) and it's been close to 2 years. One thing I noticed about six months ago (incidently about the same time I switched to generic finasteride) was that my acne slowly started coming back and I also think my libido has increased. I also previously had seb derm in my eyebrows thats started to come back. The interesting thing is that my acne is really only on the left side of my face. Now, in the last few months I had the same issue as I did about 2 years ago where my left temple quickly lost about half and inch to an inch of hair. The funny thing is that it seems that my right temple hasn't changed at all in the last 2 years.
Tldr: had mild acne, took finasteride for 2 years after left temple recession. Switched to generic and acne back on left side of face and recently had more left temple recession
I'm wondering if anybody has any insight as to what is going on and what I can do about it. Here Are my thoughts
(1) there is a clear link between my acne and hairline recession and it's worth trying to alter my hormones in a way that treats my acne
(2) one possible cause could be switching to generic finasteride and I should consider switching back to propecia
(3) perhaps my body has developed a resistance to finasteride and things are going to get worse leaving me with no option (worst case scenario)
(4) maybe my asymetical hairline recession is due to my asymmetrical hairline and the recession could slow down now (the left side of my hairline has always been lower and after the recession things are fairly symmetrical now)
(5) these days I take finasteride at pretty irregular times (basically every night but the time of night differs a lot) so maybe that has an effect on things
I'm considering getting a blood test to check my T/DHT/SHBG levels although I didn't get a baseline test done (silly me). Anyway, hopefully somebody can relate or has advice
