Is the commonly referenced norwood scale accurate and should that be used to accurately reflect hair loss? Why is less hair loss not shown or considered on that scale?

I don't think that it's the best scale either. Take the NW1 drawing - it shows quite a sharp 'dent' in the frontal hairline from above (i.e. not a normal mature hairline cure). Yet, everyone talks about NW1 as if that is what people with no balding have. Why?, Probably because when you look at view of the NW1 from the side then there it looks like there is absolutely no baldness at all. The two pictures don't correlate.

Also, Not many people get thinning in the way that the diagrams suggest.

Then theres the fact that they are basic black and white diagrams - they show absolutely no thinning of the crown (because they're black and white) until a big white spot appears at something like NW3. We all know that there is often at least some sort of slight thinning of the crown earlier than this and that some people get the crown thinning and keep a fairly straight hairline.

Basically, talking about people by what Norwood scale they are is Bullsh*t in my opinion.

Yeah I was just asking people what they thought about the norwood scale like how accurate is it really? I mean its like countless other things where because its been like this for 20 years it can never be changed so we are stuck with some antiquated chart whether its right or wrong.

It sounds like you guys are kind of splitting hairs here...no pun intended

The norwood scale, to me, is an accurate BASIC description of the general pattern in which males lose their hair.

It is not meant to show thickness and such because that is going to be different for everyone. Of course everyone's hair loss is going to be slightly different. The norwood scale just gives us a basic reference of pattern that can be applied to a decent majority of people to describe relatively where they are on their balding progress.

Most guys who are losing their hair experience loss in the norwood pattern or some variation of it
