Not the specialist - but this shampoo is said to be dandruff shampoo, an anti-inflammatory and aids in overall scalp health. Also, ketoconazole, the active ingredient in nizoral, has been shown to have antiandrogenic propertiesis and, said to (in some circles - but I'm sure the point is debateable) help reduce DHT and scalp sebum.

Back in the old alt.baldspot days, I'll never forget the "Nizoral is god" thread. Seemed like this product alone was enough to cure at least 1 person's hair loss and lead him back to the road of regrowth. I wouldn't expect the same results though.

I've used 1% and 2% for years, then alternated w/ Dr. Lee's 2%, and am currently on my 2 or 3rd consecutive bottle of 1%. I'm overdue to get Dr. Lee's 2% back in my rotation.

My feeling is, I have to shampoo with something anyway - so why not 1 of "The Big 3"?

Excellent point in terms of the bennies. It's said to make the hair shaft thicker by 7%. Forgot about that.

The only reason it's in the big three is because it's convenient.

If you want to grow hair, use minoxidil, not nizoral. The study showing it was roughly equivalent to 2% minoxidil didn't have many people in it, if memory serves, and it was only applied once per day. Consider that pretty much everyone uses 5% twice a day.

I used nizoral alone before finasteride and proxiphen while i was working out my regimen and it honestly did nothing, it coincided with the period of most hair loss for me.

Still, it's a convenient addition which should help, and as long as the cosmetic effect is at least as good as other shampoos ill keep using it. For some people it dries out their hair way too much, but they use it because they think it helps. Why waste the remaining time you have with hair by making it look awful?

bryan posted three studies. I don't remember what they said, but I do remember that it does help even people who don't have dermatitis. Just regular male pattern baldness guys get an 8% shaft thickness increase. And yes, it is very convenient and cheap. $15 a year if you use only 1mL per use.
