First, I would like to take the chance to thank you for all the support provided in this forum. It has been helpful to know that there are people out there that are in a similar situation as I am.
To describe my case, I am 27 years old and have always enjoyed thick hair. However, I moved to Saudi Arabia for a job offer there three years back. Since last year, I have been suffering from excessive hair loss which is mainly evident in empty space in the temple area. I was told by some colleagues here that the water which we use for bathing is the cause in this part of the world. However, I do not think that this might be the real cause since I believe hat my genetics are just playing their role. Yet, the rapid pace of shedding is what has been worrying me.
As a result, I have decided, after months of research, to get on the Propecia pill along with using minoxidil. I visited a local pharmacy here and was told that they do not carry any Propecia in this part of the world. However, Proscar was available and I was advised to use that to maintain my hair. I also purchased a cheap quality pill cutter; the only kind available here. The process of cutting the pills into quarters was close to impossible as the pill would break into small chunks and turn into powder which was somewhat frustrating.
After consulting the pharmacist whom I had purchased the pills from, I was advised to break the pill into halves and take a half every other day (i.e 2.5 mg of finasteride every other day). I am not sure that he knew what he was saying. So I thought maybe its best if I reach out to you guys in an attempt to get some serious advice on what is best to do.

As far as Propecia goes, most people seem to cut theirs into quarters (as it's easy). Most would suggest half a tablet is too much in the sense it will not be any better than a smaller quantity. My sons use approximately a sixth of a tablet and are having success with that quantity. With regard to the temple area, I think it is harder there to grow back new hair than on the top of the head. Propecia gives at least 'maintenance' to many people.

EDIT: When I mentioned cutting into sixths, I meant for Proscar which comes in 5 mg tablets. So, each dose would be about 0.8 mg

Thanks for your reply Pratc,

The thing is, as I mentioned, the cutting process of the small Proscar pill hasn't been easy at all. So I am in facing two options:
1) Take a half a pill (i.e. 2.5 mg of finasteride) on a daily basis
2) Take a half a pill (i.e. 2.5 mg of finasteride) every other day
Which of the two is more advisable?

mfobia,

Please see my edit above.

Also, what my sons do is to use a pill cutter and chop up the tablet (5 mg Proscar) into about sixths. This means sometimes they may get a fifth or a seventh (or in between) because it is cut irregularly. But it doesn't matter as it all averages out over a period of time and day to day it doesn't matter if the dose changes slightly.

People have supplied graphs showing varying dosages and outcomes. You don't need as much as 2.5 mg. Which of the two methods you mention is better? I don't know, but from what people have said, missing a day isn't important so long as you get the 'normal' dose over a reasonable period of time.
Can you not cut the halves to make approximately quarters?

Another point is that they also use Proxiphen.
