hey guys. been browsing through ur forum, looks helpful. am so glad i can find people going through the same thing as me that i can talk to. i need ur help guys.

im a diffuse thinner i think, with a v little bit of receding. my hairs generally thin all on top, mainly down the middle from front to back. when my hair is short (not even that short, just shortish), my scalp is visible from the top. in bright lighting my scalp is v visible from top and also a bit from the front. i usually have my hair a bit longer, and then the problem is more difficult to see apart from when looking from above.

im quite worried about the problem, as im only 17 (18 in a month). my thinning has been significantly going on for about a year i think. in general, the hair even on the sides of my head is a little thin - nothing like on top but still a bit thin. i have dark hair but get highlights to cover the problem a bit. i freak out a bit when i have hair cut short bcos the problems a lot more apparent.

im desperate to find something that will work, at the v least to maintain the hair i have now but hopefully regrow some. i was wondering, as im so young and have only been losing hair significantly for about a year, if i go on propecia have i got a higher chance of success? bcos my hair loss was more recent, is it possible i can regrow more easily?

also, i was a vegetarian for about 3 years, until about 6 months ago. the thing that made me give up was i noticed quite a lot of loss and thought maybe lack of protein was making me lose more? saying that, now that i eat meat, in about the last 3 months ive lost more hair than ever before. then again, ive been living on my own for 3 months bcos ive gone to university, so maybe ive not been eating enough or had a poor diet bcos of no more home cooking! if ive lost hair bcos of poor diet, especially from being a veggie until 6 months ago, will this hair come back?

i tried a product called nutrifolica (http://www.nutrifolica.com) about 3 months ago and still use it. it contains saw palmetto etc but doesnt seem to b stopping my accelerated hair loss. that was when i didnt know much about hairloss, and if u look on the website it promises to fill in all ur lost hair. neway, i want to get on to propecia, and will go c a trichologist in about a week and hopefully get a prescription.

ive read propecia starts working to inhibit dht straight away. does that mean loss will start to slow or stop straight away, i just wont b able to notice it till the hairs have grown in?

sorry the post is so long guys, im just freaking out a bit and am desperate for something to work for me. just at my age to have this problem is v scary. i noticed another young guy on this forum, who is 17. although im almost 18, my thinning is quite a fair bit worse than urs. ur stage is what i was at maybe 6 months ago.

any advice would b great, thanks a lot guys. glad i found this forum.

Start out by reading this:

Since you're so young, you may want to avoid Propecia for another couple years at least. spironolactone + minoxidil would be good topicals for you to start with. Anything usually takes at least 3 months to show results, likely more.

change of diet is a big thing. I believe I myself have triggered my hairloss by change of diet, in part. Meat has not just protein but also iron and other things that aid hair growth. Just eat the right meats- all the sites say stay away from animal fats, so stick to chicken and fish more than beef/burgers, I guess. I'm guessing and hoping that you noticed more hair fallout because you switched to a diet that is aiding/stimulating your hair growth, and just like the other agents are known to do (minoxidil, propecia, etc.), you're just getting rid of the weak hairs, and stronger hairs are going to replace them.

And use topicals. There are dht inhibitors like folligen, tricomin, revivogen, etc, and growth stimulants like nizoral/tgel, etc.

g luck.

ok..

thanks guy, the link and advice seemed pretty educating.

y did one poster think i shouldnt use propecia yet? surely thats the most effective and important method of halting the hair loss so i dont look way too bald for my age?

i basically want to maintain my hair and ideally grow more - this is fairly important to me too, as my hair is pretty much too thin for my age. would a combination of propecia and minoxidil do this for me? if minoxidil is applied topically (is there ne other way?), is this just done once a day? or twice? should i use 2% or 5%? reason propecia seemed attractive to me is bcos its so easy to take - pill form.

something i dont quite understand - propecia inhibits dht so halts loss. minoxidil grows more hair..so does minoxidil effectively stop loss? also, to what extent can propecia regrow in comparison to minoxidil, and does it take longer to regrow?

final questions about those treatments - if i used propecia and minoxidil and at some point stopped minoxidil..would i just lose the hair id regrown with minoxidil or more hair too? what about the same situation and stopping propecia? i thinkk propecia costs about £30 a month - is this right? how expensive is minoxidil? ive read about proscar, a substitute for propecia..how does this comparee pricewise and is it just as effective? i read also that using propecia or minoxidil, u experience a cycle of shedding then better growth - is this true? and how dramatic is the shedding..does it always have to occur?

lastly, a question about the diet situation. i started eating meat again about 5 months before i began to experience greater loss, which has been going on for about 1.5 months..is it still possible that this loss will b followed by better regrowth? if so, when am i likely to c this? can one regrow some hair simply by stopping being a veggie?

thanks for the time and help again guys.

shampoo

ps: should i use this nizoral shampoo? doesnt cost much does it? so seems a sensible thing to do..

how often should i wash my hair with water or shampoo it? someone told me too much shampooing or washing can contribute to losing hair? and should i use nizoral itself or in conjunction with a normal shampoo?

sorry about all thesee questions, its just i feel if i could get some systematic answers id b prepared to c my trichologist and start treatment.

ta guys, u dont know how much of a help this is :)

Any hair that sheds today has generally been dormant for around 100 days, so you should reasonably expect that propecia/minoxidil should start to help after 3 months of use. But keep in mind that minoxidil can cause sheds of its own as it sometimes causes telogen hairs to shed prematurely. finasteride. can also cause its own sheds as well. But generally that's a sign of growth around the corner. Rule of thumb is to stick with any treatment you start for 1 full year before deciding whether or not to quit.

Since you're so young, why don't you try minoxidil + spironolactone or maybe Xandrox (minoxidil + DHT inhibiter). See what happens after 6-12 months. If you're desperate enough at that point and things continue to get worse, you can consider propecia. But even at 18, a lot of people will say you're still too young.

My advice -- Try Propecia. If side effects persist after 6 months, ditch it. But try it first. It is the most scientifically proven.

Hey man,

I am a young guy also who is 17. My advice to you is:

Folligen Conditioner - Therapy conditioner that will improve your hair and add mosture and body and has copper peptides to help your hair out. Very good conditioner for thinning guys.

Nano Shampoo- Has a ton of ingrediants for healthy hair. Will thicken up your hair a bit. One bottle has lasted me over 4 months.

Xandrox 5%- It has rogaine 5% and azealiac acid. It is a regrowth stimulant to regrow some hair. Will also block 50-60 percent of dht where applied. DHT is what causes hair to thin.

Nizoral 2%- Eliminates dandruff and creates a health scalp. Essential in a hair loss regimen.

Finasteride- I would use it if I where you. You need to stop the thinning and kill the dht.

spironolactone 5%- 2 mop up remaining dht if you can afford it.

Been using this regimen and my hair looks very good now. Looks 100 percent better than it did before i started this regimen. Im sure it can help ya out. :)

Wow,

Hold your horses man!!!

All you recommended is top of the line, expensive products.

That guy barely earn two cents and buying things like Xandrox.
Well, if you have money, by all means go ahead.

However, if you are not, buy Proscar and split into 4.

ok

thanks for the different opinions on what to try. im still not certain about which line of thinking to follow but il at least now b able to go to my trichologist and ask about which treatments to use with a little more experience from u lot.

sounds a bit worrying, minoxidil and propecia can both actually cause shedding themselves? :s which is worse in causing shedding, how much shedding is it and how often does this happen?

i know u all say try propecia/minoxidil for 6-12 months before deciding to stick or not..but isnt it quite likely itll work? isnt it something like 83% of men c success with propecia and 59% with minoxidil or something? and both combined is really good?

to the other young guy, its comforting to c someone else in the same boat..u said urs improved 100%..how bad was ur thinning before and how much has it filled in? il post some pics up of my hair situation soonish.

thanks again.

extra question - do folligen and tricolum (sp?) regrow hair or act as dht inhibitors? should u use either of them with just propecia? and do they screw u up i u stop using them

I don't think there's any reason to try so many different products at once. If you start off on a bunch of different things right away you never know what it is that's working. You may be on 5 different things and only like one or two of them are having an effect, then you're just wasting money on the other products. In my opinion I would try one thing to start like propecia (along with a good shampoo), and if you don't see results then try something else such as minoxidil. You never know what one product can do for you.
If they don't work by themself, then consider using combinations.

fair enough. i was just concerned about having so much thinning so young. and i heard the more recent the loss the easier it is to get success so didnt want to leave using a certain product too long.

but seriously, what r my chances of maintaining and regrowth on just propecia? r they higher bcos my loss, although fair, only occurred mainly in the last few months, some in last 12 months and a little before?
