Hello everyone,

I have recently been having a problem with falling hair and have gone to see a dermatologist several times. I was diagnosed with severe iron deficiency anemia (ferritin level 1.2) and hypothyroidism.

Now I realize these conditions can cause some falling hair, but what alarms me is I only seem to be thinning on the top of my head, the sides and back seem normal to me. When I brought this up with my derm he basically said that one of the first things to be sacrificed is the hair when the body goes into crisis mode, and that this generally starts on the top of the head.

I am not sure if this is true or not, but he doesn't want to start me on propecia as he is adamant the falling hair is being caused by my underlying conditions.

I guess my main question is would it be smart to get on propecia in a case such as this? I am pretty certain I can talk my family doctor into writing me a prescription for it. My thinking is if I do, it can only help me keep my hair if it really is male pattern baldness, but if I don't I could end up losing more hair. Basically, I feel I have nothing to lose by going on it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The proper protocol in a situation like this is to use a growth stimulant and treat the underlying iron deficiency. Not to use an antiandrogen like Propecia. Rogaine Foam is highly recommended by many doctors in situations like this.

Good Luck.

I concurr that finasteride is not a good option because in this case hair loss is provocked by an iron deficiency. Probably the doctor is right when point to hair from the top are more "rapids" in a bad situation, but why use minoxidil for ever?

My guess is the use of a preventive method, with the possiblility to leave the treatment in any moment.

If you start finasteride now & the hair grows back you will never know if it grew back because of the finasteride or because you treated your anemia & hypothyroidism.

Then you might be taking finasteride for the rest of your life for no reason.

Stick with the medications your doctor has given you for your condition and see if the hair grows back. If after 6 months there is no improvement in your hair you can discuss it with him again.

Thanks for advice guys. I will just wait 6 months or so and treat my underlying conditions, and then re-examine my hair.

Thanks again!

aye.

Treat your problems first then your hair will probably come back.
If not then seek alternatives.
