A lot of people have a large whorl directly under bright light. It could be diffusing, or it could be his natural hair. If all else looks fine then I wouldn't worry.

The sides of his head are slightly thinning as well

Like Pegasus said, some people just have bigger whorls. I'm gonna give you an example. The picture with the big whorl is my eight year old brother, the two pics with the smaller one is mine now. Both are under direct light but mine also has flash + bright light. Some people have big ones and some people have small ones.
