Hi everyone...
I'm 40 years old, 6' tall and about 195lbs. I started noticing my crown was thinning in my late 20's, mainly when I had a shorter haircut. The whorl in the crown always looks a bit thinner, even on a child, but mine was thinner yet.

If I wore my hair longer, a typical layered haircuit, it would mask it pretty well, not a comb over, but it would be covered. As I keep my hair short over the years, the whorl pattern slowly disappeared and is now a bald spot the size of a lime or small lemon.

The rest of my hair is OK, from straight on or the sides I look like a NW1 or somewhere between NW1 and NW2.

The fact that I haven't lost anything in the front or temples makes my whole head dark and the bald spot really stands out. You have this whole head of brown hair that has good coverage and then this white spot.

I really hate it, I got married when it started, so it's not in my wedding pictures or anything. If I were to grow my hair longer, 3-4 inches all over, it would not cover the spot and it would look bad. So I wear my hair short, #4 on the sides and about 1-2 inches on top.

The spot really bothers me though, so I am asking if it's just better to give it a buzz with a #0 or #1 all over. I have done this before, it looked OK. I really hate this "Vertex Balding" as they call it.

I am not that vain and I don't want to depend on chemicals, mainly because my wife and I are trying to have another child, these drugs are a no-no for that. Even afterwards, I don't want to take pills or use chemicals for the rest of my life just for that.

Just need some opinions. Is it better to have a (almost) full head of hair and just have this bald spot? Or just buzz it all?

Thank you all

I would say it depends on whether or not you prefer longer hair or not. If you don't mind the longer, layered look, I'd do that. If you like shorter hair, buzz it. I think at 40 years old, if a layered cut covers a bald spot, it's not a combover.
This is a combover:

Let me clarify, when I was in my early 30's, the layered cut would cover it because it wasn't that bad. At this point, 10 years later, it will not cover it, so I keep my hair short.
