Hi Guys,
I have been reading Hair Loss Talk for well over a year. I am a 31 year old male with diffuse thinning of the top. My scalp can be seen whether my hair is long or short and it is obvious the sides and back are thicker. I also have a receeding hairline and my temples have more or less gone the way of the dinosaur. Anyway, I started thinning at around 18 (I think my temples were long gone be my early twenties). I decided to combat my thinning at around twenty four. By that time my hair was still OK, but you could see me scalp fairly easily if my hair was short (by short, I mean about an inch or two on top). I also started to develop a thinner spot just behind my hairline. So...I went on 2% minoxidil and religiously applied the greasy mess about a year or so. When I realized 2% wasn't working I upped the ante to 5%. I unfortunately have to report the minoxidil did very little, if anything, for me. My hair continued to thin throughout the application of the product.
I dropped minoxidil and didn't apply any medication to my hair for about a year and my scalp continued to thin About nine and a half months ago I approached my primary care provider about Propecia and she gladly gave me a prescription. So how has the battle gone so far? Well, my libido has definitely dropped, but I still maintain an erection (some days it seems a little softer than it used to). My wife also noticed the drop in my sexual appetite (maybe that's a good thing since we already have two little boys  ).
Now for the most important part....my hair. Disappointingly, I have yet to see a miracle although I will say my hair "seems" to be maintaining. I have not seen any regrowth or thickening of the scalp. I did think at first I was responding, but it was probably wishful thinking. I do have many nonpigmented vellous hairs and nonpigmented terminal hairs but both of these populations while visible under certain light do not make a significant contribution to my hair's appearance. I am going to continue with propecia indefinitely to see what will happen in the long term and I may add minoxidil, but the idea of drug cocktails for a few hair follicles is not the way to a healthy lifestyle.
Keep up the good fight and feel free to ask me any questions!
